The Washington Post should (and likely will, if they haven’t already) simply invite the White House to take legal action if they feel that Trump has been harmed by this statement.
They should issue a written and widely circulated challenge in such a belittling, demeaning, insulting, talking down kind of way, that the Head Narcissist is virtually forced to sue (and lose). They should drag it out as long as possible, to have more opportunities to ridicule him and cause him to spend more money. And then counter-sue.
That’s the explanation that makes the most sense, although hard to believe.
