Are you saying that you don’t believe that the technique used was appropriate for the data? If so, do you have another one to propose? To put it another way, it appears you’re suggesting foregoing the mathematical model in favor of eyeballing it.
What “technique”?? All they’ve done is do a linear fit (linear regression) to a noisy data, and show that best-fit line. All it says is “if there is a trend, it’s downwards.” And that’s averaged over the whole 5 months. They haven’t even show how good those fits are (no correlation coefficient, no chi-square value, no P value).
If the question is “Has the Strongly Approve number declined over the past 5 months”, then this analysis is appropriate, if they’d show us how good those fits are.
If the question is “is the Strongly Approve number continuing to decline now”, then you need to ignore the initial drop, and look at the past few months of data. I’m an astrophysicist so I’d do this by doing a chi-square linear fit and reporting the chi-square value and the 1-sigma error for the slope. I imagine analysts in other fields may calculate the p value against a null hypothesis that the number is unchanged over time.
p.s. That is how I would analyze the numbers to show there is no correlation, but really, eyeballing the data is enough in this case. I have never come across a case where eyeballing the data shows no correlation, but statistical analysis showed a correlation. The reverse happens all the time though. The human brain is very good at seeing patterns; it sees patterns even when there isn’t any.
I’d be curious to see how some of the other analysis would come out.
