So I want to make some buttermilk dressing. Not Ranch, but Buttermilk. If you’re old enough and in the right region, you’ll remember that Buttermilk dressing was hugely popular and you could get it everywhere, until it got replaced by Ranch.
I’ve Googled up recipes but they’re not coming out right. I’m usually pretty good at fixing recipes, but I can’t seem to get this one figured out.
I’m trying to eat healthier, so I’d prefer a recipe with little or no mayonnaise/sour cream/etc. (Low fat mayo & cream is just right out. That stuff is Satan-jizz as far as I’m concerned.)
Anyone have a good recipe for Buttermilk Dressing they’d like to share?
Thanks!
Bump because I feel your pain. Saw this yesterday and wondered what answer you’d get, and since you haven’t, I’ll boost ya up to page 1, because now I’m curious, too.
Thinking that since none of the Google recipes work for you, you might be talking about an old-fashioned cream dressing, I looked in my 1923 and 1964 Fannie Farmers, and the 1923 has an assortment of cream dressings. It’s possible that some long-ago housewifely cook substituted buttermilk for the cream, and lo! buttermillk dressing was born. But really I have no idea, just brainstorming here.
But since I don’t know what you’re aiming at, I dunno if it would be helpful to copy them out for ya.
What Google dressings have you tried that don’t work? That would give us a starting point…
Anyway, bumpity bump…
That might be hard. The hand made buttermilk dressings I remember were so good, not because of buttermilk, but because they were based on a fresh, unhealthy, handmade mayonaise. As opposed to most of the other dressings we ate which were made with old, stale, processed, and preservativised jarred Mayo.
I’ve never tried this recipe but it looks like it might work. Actually, I’ve never had buttermilk dressing, so I don’t even know if it’s what you’re looking for. Forgive me if you’ve tried it and didn’t like it. You could probably use regular sour cream, but I would think the vinegar would help to cover up the Satan-jizziness of the reduced-fat sour cream. Also, it’s not mayonnaise-based like the rest of the recipes I came across.
Buttermilk Dressing
1 c. low-fat buttermilk
1/2 c. fruit-flavored vinegar, such as apple cider, raspberry, or blueberry
1/2 c. reduced-fat sour cream
1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. white pepper
In a jar with a tight-fitting lid, place all of the ingredients. Cover tightly and shake until well blended, then refrigerate until serving time or for up to 5 days. Makes about 2 cups.
Let me know if you like it.
Thanks for the bump DDG, I didn’t think anyone was going to answer.
The ones I’ve tried have been similar to this. I can’t find the actual recipes at the moment.
It’s pretty close, but not quite right. Usually I’m pretty good at finagling recipes, but not this time. Of course, part of the problem may be that I haven’t had Buttermilk Dressing in mumble mumble years.
wolfman, that could be it. Maybe I need to try some mayo. I’m not fanatical, just trying to cut down. Maybe adding just a little mayo would do the trick…
I saw mayo & sour cream recipes, maybe I’ll give one of those a try. I have to admit that it would be evil jarred mayo, or even [heresy]the old MW[/heresy]. If it turned out really good, then I might think about making mayo for dressing.
eLunatic, that doesn’t look like what I’m looking for, the garlic and parsley are definitely part of the flavor. But I may have to give it a try (with some real sour cream, that is
) for something different.
Thanks y’all!
It’s also possible that in the intervening period between Now and mumble mumble years, the ingredients themselves have changed, for economic reasons. Maybe the version you remember from mumble mumble years ago was made with homemade mayo from what would eventually be called free range chicken eggs, or maybe the sour cream was from cows on an actual farm, instead of a Milk Production Facility.
