Buy XBox 360 or wait for the PS3?

This year has been good for me money-wise. (Comparatively, that is. Not like I’m RichMuzzy) As a treat for myself I’m going to get a new game system. But I can’t decide: wait for the PS3 or buy the XBox360? Money’s not a real sticking point (although the PS3 price does give me pause). And I do generally dislike MicroSoft products… But I need a game system fix!

Oh, I should mention: I own a PS2. But I’m not that concerned about being able to play my old PS2 titles on the new system.

I’ve been debating the same question, although it’s more a hypothetical for me right now.

I think the real battle is going to be XB360 vs. Wii, because the PS3 is too expensive for most people. Hell, you could buy an XB360 AND a Wii for the price of a PS3.

You could always go the “games I want to play” route. PS3 will have FFXIII shortly after launch (I’m assuming the “shortly,” as I’m pretty sure it’s not a launch title), but in the meantime the 360 has Rockstar Table Tennis…and, um, other cool games, I’m sure.

Oh yeah, DOA 4. They kick high.

I’m torn between buying a PS3, or spending the money on a CPU overhaul when S.T.A.L.K.E.R. comes out this fall.

As far as I’m concerned, as long as Metal Gear Solid 4 is only coming out for the PS3 (which it definitely is,) then the PS3 is what I’m going to be buying, cost be damned. I’m trying to decide if the other games are enough to make it worth it, though, and I’m not sure that they are. I’ve looked at Wii’s lineup and it definitely doesn’t appeal to me (and neither does the wacky controller - why reinvent the wheel?) I’ve played the 360 and I love the graphics and it has some great games out - but one thing it won’t ever have is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Yeah, I’ve been doing some searching since posting the Q and it seems like MGS4 and Killzone are the two titles I’d really miss out if I went XBox. (I don’t know why, but I can’t get interested in the Wii. The Nintendo system still seems like a “kids” console to me, which I’m sure is unfair and not true.)

It’s neither unfair nor untrue - it IS a kid’s console! No GTA series = scared of losing their squeaky clean image = kids’ console.

Is there really anything wrong with being a kids console, though? And NGC has most of the BioHazard games, MGS:tTS, Killer7 an’ Eternal Darkness all of which aren’t really intended for younger audiences. Ah, I’m not trying to argue with you, either. I understand that NGC and the Wii are consoles that’re marketed more towards children and as being family oriented. Especially when compared to the PS3 and XBox360.

Anyway, in regards to the OP, I think you should get a PS3. With the backwards compatibility, it’ll have the largest game library. That’s a good thing. PS3 will also be getting MGS4, BioHazard 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Silent Hill 5, Devil May Cry 4 and whatever the heck Heavy Rain turns out to be.

I think I may be talking myself out of getting anything right away. I want to see how the launch of the PS3 goes.

Honestly, if Sony could beg the creator of Katamari Damacy to make a PS3-native version of the game, there’d be no decision to be made.

I just bought a 360 today. It’s in time for Madden (even though that’s every damned console) and I’ll need GTA and Halo 3 when they come out.

As someone who has played with all 3 systems at E3 and is reasonably familiar with their line ups, I strongly recommend you get the Wii when it comes out.

With that out of the way, I can guarantee you that both the 360 and the PS3 will have a bunch of great, exclusive games that you will miss out on if you don’t buy both. (Gears of War and Halo 3 come to mind for the 360.)

Of course, not everybody is hardcore so you must ask yourself 3 questions:

How many games do you plan on buying during the lifetime of the console? (How many games do you have for your PS2 right now? That ought to be a good estimate)

How important is online play to you? The 360 will certainly dominate that segment, no matter what lies Sony utters.

Are you pining for a BluRay player or do you not care if you have one for the next 2-3 years?

I haven’t finalized my next-gen console plans, but right now the Wii is ahead of everyone else by a wide margin. The lower price, wide selection of titles, and newbie-friendly controls means it will be easier for everyone in my family to enjoy it.

I have the 360 and never looked back. Call of Duty 2 looks awesome on it. And that’s without an HDTV. Halo 3 is, of course, a selling point. The GTA series has already been ported to the XBox, so that isn’t a big concern. And I can’t wait to get Madden '07.

As mentioned earlier it’s going to come down to the games you most want to play, but also what you want to do with it. With Media Center or Vista (the beta is available for use, and looks really nice IMO) you can get near-complete integration with the 360. Throw a TV card in your PC and throw out the TiVO.

A few years ago (I bought the original XBox the day it was released) I bought a PS2 just for GTA. Once the series was ported to XBox, I sold the PS2 to my BIL. I’m just not as commited to the PS-exclusive titles. Again, it’s going to be what you most want a system to do. And the Blu-Ray angle doesn’t really faze me. It’s a rather unimformed opinion, but I just don’t see the format being one worth the extra cost.

The Wii looks like it could be fun (I love the idea of how baseball games will use the controllers), but unless I win one in a contest, I’ll likely never own one.

I might be known as an MS whore by some, but I can honestly say I can’t see why anyone would be disappointed with a 360.

IMHO, of course.

Well, I for one have bought a 360 and am definitely looking back.

Call of Duty 2 looks allright but stops rather abruptly. (no more room on the DVD?)
Tomb Raider : Legends looks quite nice but stops rather abruptly. (no more room on the DVD?)
Oblivion : looks beautiful, lots of value, but buggy as hell
Ghost Recon : looks beautiful but isn’t much fun to play
Project Gotham Racing : looks crap and plays crap

I am awaiting Dead Rising with bated breath though (come on : Hords of zombies, all sorts of weapons, this has got to be good).

I will buy a PS3 but not until there are some decent titles for it.
The big thing about the PS3 will be the almost unlimited amount of storage on Blue-Ray discs.
It should be possible to create longer, better-looking games for it. (Developers have been whining about MS’ decision to use DVD as their format for years).

As for the Wii, colour me severely unimpressed.
The EyeToy sounded like a great idea too, but was a complete load of bullocks.

I’ve been debating this with myself for a while too, except my version of the question is “PS3 AND a Wii? Or just a Wii?” If you don’t plan to get a Wii, and you have plenty of money to throw around, I’d go with the PS3. There don’t seem to be any 360-exclusive games worth getting, for one thing, and PlayStation has a tendency to pick up strange and wonderful Japanese titles. I think between a PS3 and a Wii you could get just about any game you wanted to play, since most notable Xbox titles seem to be available either on other consoles or PC. I’m planning to wait and see, but then again I don’t have any plans to get a 360.

I’m waiting for the Wii. I haven’t seen anything on the xbox360 that impresses me. I don’t have a HDTV and Sony’s pricing for the PS3 is insane.
