I’m tired of the ol’ Coke/Pepsi-line sodas that dominate locally. Besides, I want to switch to some nice-tasting non-caffeine drinks. With that in mind, I’ve 2 related requests.
1)Recommend some. Something like cola or cream sodas. Also, some chocolate drinks. Root beers are out.
2)They should be available conveniently. I don’t mind ordering online, but that’s a last resort, given the shipping surcharge. Ideally, some of the large chains like Wal-mart, Marsh…etc should have them.
So far, I’ve sampled a few drinks. Liked the Thomas Kemper Vanilla Cream Soda. Liked YooHoo chocolate drinks. Want to try Cocio from Denmark. Anyone know where I can get these in the US (mortar or online)?
I like Twisted Bean Vanilla Brew, which is available at a lot of “alternative” grocery stores. It’s awfully expensive, though, considering it’s just soda pop (about $6 for a 4-pack, I think).
There’s a place in Dallas named Ifs ands & Butts. I found it looking for a cigar shop when I was in town. They have an really cool selection of bottled drinks. I know you said online as a last resort, but you should check them out. I was so happy to get an Ale-8-1 while in town.
Ginger beer or ginger brew, certainly avaiable in a Caribbean-oriented store but by now probably a lot of regular American supermarlets carry at least one brand.
Stewart’s Orange ‘n’ Cream soda. Tastes like a Creamsicle (orange and vanilla), only better.
A&W Cream Soda… their root beer is great too, but you said it’s “out.” IBC and Stewart’s have cream sodas too, so you should have a taste test.
I’m a big fan of pineapple soda, and you can usually find a Fanta or Sunkist brand, or several Hispanic, Jamaican/Caribbean, or generic store-brand varieties.
In my experience, no Yoo-Hoo-style chocolate drinks are any substitute for real, commercially-blended chocolate milk. You can add your own chocolate syrup to milk all day, and it still won’t taste as good.
I’ve got to get my hands on Bundsberg sometime! Maybe the next time I’m ordering one of the big 2 kilo buckets of vegemite I’ll get some. I’ve not seen it available in the US.
Old Tyme Jamaican style ginger beer was good too, but I can’t find the damn stuff, and when I do, it’s flat!
Inka Cola, la bebida del Peru, is a tasty sweet drink. It looks like Mountain Dew, but tastes almost like bubble gum. Not sure of any domestic importers, though.
Howsabout Jones Soda? I like them, they have tons of flavors, cute labels, and they are available at Panera Bread and lots of other places. The website says they can be found at Target, too, but I don’t shop there so I can’t verify that. When they open a target nearby, I should go try and find some, hmm…
