'Bye, Scotty

Farewell, Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. :frowning:

Crap, submit too soon. Did anyone see him in Trekkies where he talked about meeting a fan who was suicidal and keeping her going by encouraging her to come to the next Trek convention and the next, etc.

Bo’sun, pipe commander Scott over the side

Damn.

One step from personal story:

A few friends of mine went to a Star Trek convention in Atlanta years ago, and Doohan was one of the guests. For lunch, they left the hotel and went to a Wendy’s down the street. After they got their table, they saw Doohan in line. After he got his food, he saw their convention tags and came and sat with them.

They said he was totally nice to them, and they didn’t say a WORD about Star Trek. He talked with them like they had been old friends for years. What a class act.

RIP James Doohan. Here’s to you.

At least it was on an auspicious day (anniversary of 1st moon landing)

The fact that I’m an engineer owes no small part to capt Scott (IIRc his final rank)

Brian

One more into the Jeffries Tube, dear friends …

RIP, Scotty–the luckiest Redshirt in Federation history.

I saw him once at a convention. He was positively surly as he answered questions. But he was also suffering from severe bronchitis and probably should have been at home in bed. The crowd took that into account and didn’t hold it against him; they were touched by the fact he had honored his commitment.

Sad news.

Just heard this on the light jazz radio station at work. They never give any news to speak of, so I was doubly shocked.

Hope he enjoys this next adventure.

The closest was “Beam us up, Scotty” from The Lorelei Syndrome, one of the animated episodes.

I’m glad the CNN account mentioned his activities on D-Day:

RIP.

:frowning: I’m sorry to hear of his passing, James Doohan seemed to be one of the most accesable and easy to relate to people from Trek

i’ll fondly remember his reactions to the Mac Plus in Voyage Home, in fact, whenever i’m dealing with an obstinate Mac, i tend to pick up the mouse , look into it and speak into it in a bad imitation of a Scottish Brogue and say “Hello, Computer?!?”

i also use Scotty’s technique of never telling the customer how long it’ll “really” take to fix their computer, as per the exchange between Scotty and Geordi

G; The Captain wants this done in two hours
S; so how long will it really take?
G; two hours
S; ahh, but laddie ya didn’t’ tell him how long it’d really take, didja
G; yes, two hours
S; Laddie, you got a lot to learn if you want people to start thinkin’ of you as a miracle worker, you never tell them how long it’d really take…

I’ll raise a virtual glass of Aldebran Whisky (it is…green) in tribute to the passing of a great miracle worker, farewell James “Scotty” Doohan, may you arrive on a ship where the Dilithium crystals will never crack and you’ll have all the time you’ll need to keep the ship (No bloody A, B, C, or D) running in top form

Qapla!

(no, i’m really not a fanboy…really…)

Somewhere I have a picture from a con when I was about thirteen (this would have been 1990ish) with him. It’s really funny because I was standing there smiling and BAM! he kissed me on the cheek without warning, and I started giggling insanely, and so the picture is of me with him and I’m laughing like crazy. With a really bad perm, if I remember right.

He’ll be missed. sniff

Khaaaaaaaan!

I wish he had done futurama as well.

I was surprised to feel sad when I heard this as I really don’t know the man except for his work on Star Trek and in the 70s with Space Acamedmy (Or was it Jason of Star command?)

I liked him and was surprised to find some people in engineering courses at my college admitted he was the reason they joined. One said as a kid he watched the reruns and wanted to be an engineer when he grew up.

I always found it odd but I’ll be Doohan would have been touched.

Only 5 of the original 7 left… very sad.

“I cannae hold ‘er t’gether much longer, Captain! I’m givin’ 'er all she’s got!”

“He’s dead, Jim.”

Forgot the :(.

I just heard this on the radio. Very sad news indeed. He was much loved.

He was very ill but it is still sad to see him go.
He was one of the most endearing (and enduring) characters on television.
It’s like losing a neighbor you’ve known for your whole life.
Warp speed Mr Scott.

I canna take much more of this!
I think my favorite Scotty bit, besides the drinking the alien under table, is in The Trouble with Tribbles. The whole scene in the bar and then later explaining to Kirk why they got into the fight was just great.

Sorry to lose him, but I’m glad he died before the Alzheimers turned him into a total piece of broccoli. (I’ve seen what it can do firsthand and death is preferable.)

A pity for his youngest daughter (Sarah, 5), but at least she has a huge video legacy to remember him by. Twenty years from now she’ll probably still be able to say “My Dad was Montgomery Scott” and people will know exactly who she’s talking about. (She’ll also be one of the very few 25 year olds in 2030 whose dad lost a finger at D-Day!)

Angels beam thee to eternal bliss, Jimmy.
