C&C Generals: How does it compare?

I’ve played most of the C&C series, with the exception of renegade and some of the Add-on paks, but until now, my 3D card was too crappy to play Generals.

RA2 and Yuris revenge is my favorite game/s of the series, despite being totally over the top, but they have a high FUN factor which often seem to be missing from some of the other games(RA1).

Now, that it’s possible, I have to ask:

1. Is it worth it? It’s down to $20 right now.

2. I know it doesn’t tie into the other games at all, but what it is about? I’ve heard some vague stuff about a three way between the US, China and an AQ-like terrorist Organization, but nothing more then that.

3. Is it more serious or, like the rest of the CNC series, laden with fantastic elements?

Well, it’s not bad, but it’s nothing like the other C+C games. RA2 and Yuri’s are my favs as well. I have Generals, but I rarely play it. The resource gathering and interface are more like Starcraft’s than C+C. Also like Starcraft is upgradable units.

Storywise, never got much farther than three groups fighting each other. Graphics are totally different than the other C+C games as well, much more 3d. More serious, but with some over the top units, such as the Chinese tanks that you can upgrade with bunkers on top, that hold 5 fighters. The hackers are a neat idea, stealing money from the enemies. Is it worth $20? Probably.

I thought it was pretty awful. RA1 (h2h mode) and RA2 (any mode) are my favorite games of all time. Generals was a departure from what I liked about these two. It was worse than Tiberian Sun (which would have been cool had it used the same engine as RA2!)

The graphics were so “good” they are bad. The interface is difficult and sluggish.

C&C is a simple game at heart. It was my mindless relaxation. This one tried to make it something more than it was.

I found C&C Generals to be a fun and worthwhile pickup at $20. I mostly play over a LAN with friends though. We generally try and see how many Hard Level computer opponents we can take out. However, the game does seem to be lacking in units (though I’m an old Total Annihilation diehard, so damn near anything’s lacking in units to me). I have yet to check out the expansion pack.
