C.K. Dexter Haven, what is "this"?

What if the discussion had been about bondage in Verhoven films instead?

I don’t remember if it’s a rule, but there’s at least a strong admonition to avoid starting “Don’t read this thread if you’re offended by (blank), we’re going to be talking about (blank) here” threads.

Right. But posts on the NFL don’t skeeve people out. An abnormally large percentage of posts on topics that don’t bother people is probably OK. An abnormally large percentage of posts on topics that do bother people (and that bring the poster sexual gratification) are probably not OK.

And I stand by the numbers that I posted earlier. I do think they’re meaningful, when you take them in context. The issue isn’t that Evil Captor is a one-trick pony. Lots of posters have very specific topics they’re knowledgable about and post a great deal on. But I can’t think of any other posters where that knowledge and those posts involve satisfying their libido in some way.

Geeze, somebody actually complained to the board admin about EC making too many threads about a particular subject, instead of simply not reading them?

Why didn’t the board administration reply back with “just don’t open threads you are not interested in, like everybody else, you fucking jackass”?

I would have never even noticed EC’s thread if it hadn’t been closed. It seemed like a perfectly valid thread from the title, and only opened it because I wondered why it was closed. And as much as I’m this board, which is way too fucking much by the way, I would have never noticed EC’s predilections. You know why?

I ignore the threads on subjects I’m not interested in, instead of whining to the board administration that people are talking about things I’m not interested in.

If you are so weirded out by bondage that simply reading the word in a thread title makes you go running to the board administration, perhaps this whole internet thing just isn’t for you.

First I want to apologize. My teasing comment in that thread may not have been the cause of the closing but I’m sure it didn’t help. Really, I was just playing.

Secondly, I’d like to state loud and clear for the record, that I have no problem whatsoever with Evil Captor’s posting about bondage even though I am not remotely interested in it.

Seriosuly, what’s next? Shall we smother all the penis thread? You know, I really despise spectator sports and am tired of all the threads on them.

Oh, right, it has to be by one person. Hmm, I’m sure if I liked I could find a trend in many posters histories.

Seriously, what’s wrong with bondage? All you who are icked out by it, what exactly are you icked out by? Bondage doesn’t automatically have to mean whips and chains. It could just mean two silk handkerchiefs.

I recommend you try it sometime, it can be fun.

Anyway, I bow to the decision of the mods, even if they do seem a bit prudish, but I think the *posters * who go around lecturing others are awfully silly.

Zere vill be strict quotas! Ein poster vill be permitted only to make 5% uff his or her threads about ein given subject! As ein consequence, ze board expects to zee twenty times as many ‘throwaway’ threads to help mit de quotas. Such is progress!

Comic book threads, of courze, exempted.

OK, I honestly don’t remember being asked to knock off bondage threads for a couple of months minimum. Not in a thread, not via email. If someone has done so and I have ignored it, I apologize, but it wasn’t wilfully ignoring a mod request, but just not knowing the request had been made. The first I’ve known of any mod decision along these lines was via email from Dex, yesterday.

I’m a writer. I write essays along with everything else. What I read on this board is generally going to enter into what I write … how could it be otherwise. And while I have posted stuff that’s helped me in the past with essays, it’s always been because I had a genuine interest in what I was posting, not a put-up job just to further an essay. As I’ve written, I’ve used SDMB as a sounding board for my ideas of all kinds. Some people are squicked by some of my ideas. That’s just ignorance, I believe. That thing we are supposed to be fighting here, last I checked.

In any event, no more bondage posts for me, though I’m thinking about a nice meta thread exploring some of the ideas that have been presented here about what’s right for the Dope and what’s not. I hope that will not be considered off-limits.

I have little or no interest in bondage. I’ll go out of my way to avoid movies that I know have some aspect of it. I don’t like it, don’t want to see it, and find it offensive.

That having been said, I have no problem with EC posting his bondage threads as long as they are clearly labeled, as the closed thread in question was. It was clearly labeled, and so I can avoid it completely and go along my way quite happily. In fact, the only reason I know people are fed up with EC’s bondage fixation is due to Pit threads. I’ve managed to avoid most of his posting on the subject in other forums so it doesn’t bother me.

Just my 2 cents worth.

All right, that’s enough.

Excalibre, deliberate mispellings of user names are not allowed. This is an official warning – do not do this again. As you have several previous warnings, the moderating team will be discussing your future posting privileges.

I’m closing this thread. Remember, everyone – the guiding principle of the SDMB is “don’t be a jerk”.

This thread has been closed for reasons not related to Evil Captor; that needs to be clear.

A little explanation and understanding goes a long way on all sides of a disagreement. Evil Captor, we appreciate what you had to say here.

We never want to stifle discussion or impede discourse. At the same time, people do need to know up front what they’re getting into before they get into it. We may ask for more disclaimers on the front end of threads so that people can clearly see this may not be a subject they wish to pursue further . . . but if they do, it’s on them and not on the original poster or management.

Ultimately we’re all responsible for what we say and do here, and that includes what threads we look at and how we feel about them. (Within forum rules, of course, always; we’re not giving house room to violations of policy.) The tent is big enough that there will always be threads that you like to see and threads that are not pleasing and even threads you don’t care about one way or the other. To steal a quote on another topic that has great application here: Use wisely your freedom of choice.

I am rescinding excalibre’s warning for manipulating names. I thought, as apparently do many others, that this was a clear rule. However, that does not seem to be the case, and I do not wish to hold something against a user that was not a clear rule.

This will not count against excalibre, and my apologies for the confusion or hurt feelings in regards to this entire matter.
