C25k--come run with us

And yes, that would be one full week between running days 2 and 3. Let’s just say life got in the way of working out within the last week. I’m hoping it doesn’t take as long to finish week 9!

My 5k is December 13, so I suppose starting next week I’ll start gradually increasing my treadmill speed. How thrilled am I.

Haven’t been running because my left ankle is giving me grief for some unknown reason, but I have been using the elliptical.

I don’t take breaks on the elliptical, but I go slower. 35min=2.5 miles elliptical, 25min= 2.5 miles running with occasional walking.

Going to San Diego tomorrow, and really wish I could run along the beach. I’ll try, anyways, but even if I am walking, it’ll still be awesome.

I think I may have Teh Sick… not sure about running at all tomorrow.

I got Saucony ProGrid Rides. I felt bad for the woman who was getting me shoes. The ones I bought were the first ones I tried on. She kept on bringing me shoes to try on, but they all felt the same.

Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten to go out running in them yet. Normally, I run MWF. This week, I knew I would spend all day on Wednesday driving, so I was planning on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday or Friday. I got the Sunday run in, but my oil change yesterday afternoon (after which I was going to run) ended up taking four hours and I didn’t have time to run before going to work that evening. So, I haven’t ran since Sunday.

I’m hoping to get a run in tomorrow morning. I’m nervous about this for a plethora of reasons. The main ones being I’ve been doing all of my running on a treadmill thus far and it’ll be w4d2; w4d1sucked a big one. We’ll see how it goes.

Nice!
I haven’t tried Sauconys, but I need to find a new shoe. I was wearing Asics Gel Fortitude, until they “upgraded” those and I didn’t like the fit or feel. Then I got into the Nike Moto, until they “upgraded” those and…well, you see where this is going. I will seek those out. Also, if that’s the price you paid…? Not bad. As neutral runners, we tend to get off more cheaply because our shoes have fewer bells and whistles. Still, if those work for you, check out eBay, or else become e regular at the store and maybe they have a frequent buyer discount.

I ran a 5-mile “Turkey Chase” today and I am so super happy with how I did!! I started easy, stayed easy, and went all-out in the last mile. My only issue was the temperature—38 degrees is right on the shorts/pants cusp for me. I went with shorts (actually a running skirt—super cute!) and was cold for the first mile, but glad by the end that I had chosen lighter clothes.

Haven’t read through the whole thing, just wanted to add some encouragement…

I completed the C25K a little while back, culminating in a 5K road race a couple of weeks after the “end”.

It was awesome.

I’ve had little I’ve felt proud of lately, but that sure felt great!

One thing I would suggest for the program - slow down, and don’t worry about only making it out 1 or 2 times some weeks. Extend the program. It works even if it takes 15 weeks. I’m now running 6-7k every other day, and I can’t beleive that earlier this summer I found even the first week so challenging.

YOU can do it - and it feels SO GOOD!!!

lorene–Good for you! Congrats on doing your race! That is so exciting.

I also wear Sauconys. I did not run today. I can feel a cold coming on, but slept for 12 hours (which made me feel much better, but also made me almost late for Tgiving dinner). I did walk home from my MIL’s, about 2 miles. So, there is that.

I have to get for work tomorrow at 0430, so no running tomorrow, either. Saturday I’m hoping to do over 2 miles. I hope to drive out a 2.5 mile route tomorrow after work and run it on Saturday. Then no running until Wednesday: Monday is bowel prep day for colonoscopy on Tuesday. Sorry if that’s TMI…

Woot! Back on track after my calf issues. I don’t know about the rest of you but wow, if I miss a single run I lose what seems like half of my conditioning.

Getting ready to run a Jingle Bell run this morning with my DIL here in Detroit. I only packed my running tights because it was forecast to be colder than it is. So at 36F I’ll definitely overheat. Oh well, this is a fun run.

Nothing fun about overheating!! Good luck.

I’d say we should run together someday, but I actually hate running with people. Maybe we could sign up for a race, though, and meet up at the end (if you don’t mind waiting for me, which I’m sure would be the case…) and reward ourselves with hot chocolate or something.

Ya know, I knew there was a reason I like you. People always ask me to join their running clubs or run w/ them and I detest running WITH people. That’s too much like when I was doing PT in the Army–no thanks. I like to run alone or solitary in a group (like a race).

And pffft I would be waiting for you. I’m not the one who’s below 10 minute miles. yet.

A-fricking-men.

So today I finally got my ass out to run. It’s 40 degrees, right? That can’t possibly too much worse than 47 degrees, right?

Wrong. No major pain or anything. Just my head, aching. And my throat. Burning. Gasping. Spasming! This was with a jacket that had a high neck. I think I need to add a scarf to my running attire or something. How do you people do it?

<looks innocently at jsgoddess> You mean it’s supposed to get easier?!?

I lose some of it, I’m sure. Not that there’s all that much to begin with. I did drive out a 2.3 mile run (my neighbor apparently doesn’t do nice “round” figures), but I figure that’s good enough for me. I run tomorrow. There will be blood. (just kidding. My statement re running just seemed dramatic).
I would rather be a bit cold than overhear. I hate being hot in any of its many guises. Blech.

Did my Week 3 Day 3 pushups earlier. They were rough. 22-25-20-20-35. Now I’m trying to decide do I go out and run soon or wait for the Girl to get home. I’m leaning towards running while it’s still pretty warm out. Although compared to you northern folks I’m a super wuss.

Congrats to everyone who has been running the past couple of days, especially those of you who did races!

You do get used to it. It’s just hard for me with the cold air I breathe in - it burns the back of my throat, so I alternate between breathing through my nose and getting air-starved and then breathing through my mouth for a bit and hitting the back of my throat with that cold air. What I really hate is cold eyeballs! I do find that running in the cold is made infinitely more bearable with a good hat that covers my ears. It’s kind of magical how you warm up so much once you get going (except for where that cold air comes into your body!) I’ve definitely changed my perception of warm versus cold throughout this running thing - before, 60 was cold to me and now 60 and sunny is short sleeve weather and if I wear more I’m going to be regretting it before long.

I’m still having a hard time overdressing - guess that judgment takes practice. My super-cold-weather-wind-blocker tights seem perfectly appropriate - even too cold - when I put them on sometimes in the mornings, but after a mile they often swelter. I think I have a hard time adding in the effects of sun, wind, etc.

Ran with my mom yesterday and kicked her butt all over turkey day. (That might be part of why, of course - it feels good to keep going when somebody else has to stop and walk sometimes!) I have GOT to increase the distance, though - my fanciful training plan thinks that by now I should be running three or four miles with no problem and that I should be adding in speedwork to be able to run a half marathon at the end of March. I might have to cancel the half. Thing is, that’s the last half in the South until the fall, when it’s too late to help me train for the big one!

I’m going out tomorrow to try and put in two solid miles - walk if I have to but run well. Of course, it’s very warm here - I think we made 67 today? It would be easier to run if the weather would make up its mind.

Just finished Week 4, Day 3. Woohoo! Now I get to really push it with Week 5. Only down side was running by myself since my daughter was at the beach with her cousins. We’ll see if she ran around enough to be ready for Monday’s run.

OMG. I did it. Week 6 Day 3, 25 minutes of running. 2 1/4 miles of running. I did take 3, 15 second breaks for water. Hope that’s not cheating too much.

I can’t figure it out though. I felt really crappy and tired before I went to the gym. I thought, “there’s no way this is going to happen today”. Then once I got going, I was ok. Other days I’ll feel great when I get to the gym, but once I get running, I feel like crap.

Doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it either. Some days the run is impossible, but the bike ride is easy. Other days the bike ride is hard but the run is easy. (well, easier… it’s never easy). If I could figure out some sort of pattern to it, I could figure out what makes things easier or harder. Oh well. I’ll just keep on plodding along.

When you figure that out, hold onto the secret, write it into a book, and sell it. You’ll make lots of money. Folks like Bill Rodgers and Steve Prefontaine couldn’t figure it out, either.

Contrary, how was the race?

First of all, I want to say thank you to Lorene for the good advice up above. I wasn’t ignoring you, I’ve just been very very busy and haven’t posted at all. I’m already following a good diet, but the weight loss is very very slow, sometimes not at all, so I started the C25K to hopefully pick up the pace a bit and start getting some poundage off my butt. I noticed earlier today that my legs have gotten a WHOLE lot stronger from doing this. It’s really surprising. I wasn’t expecting that.

You see, I had been jogging inside the house, just going from room to room, which wasn’t bad. It was like a little obstacle course, maneuvering around furniture and hurdling over various cats in the way. But today I went and bought a TREADMILL. Oh, boy, is it purty! The damn thing weighs about 150 lbs, and I got it out of the back of the car (an SUV) and dragged it still in its box inside the house and into the sunroom, where it is going to live. I did this all by myself. I got a bit stuck at one point when it seemed that the box was j-u-s-t a smidge wider than the kitchen doorway, but a few hard tugs pulled it through. Thing is, I noticed muscles in my legs contracting when I was doing all that pulling that I had never noticed before. DAYUM!

My next run is Sunday, when I’ll start W5. I finished up W4 yesterday. I’m going to take the weekend to put this treadmill together. It sure would be nice to have it all ready for Sunday’s run. I walk every evening after dinner as well, so I’m really going to enjoy walking on it, too. It even has it’s own fan! If I could squeeeee at a treadmill, I’d dang sure squeeeee at this one!

That’s because there isn’t. Yes, often you can trace a bad day to something obvious; bad night sleep, extra work, extra life stress, heavy workout the day before but sometimes that real bad day just comes from out of nowhere and kicks you right in the…rear. Just put it out of your mind and go to the next day. You will have extra good days for no reason, also. Just ride the crests and troughs and you’ll do fine.
