What a shame. The Carlyle Hotel will never be the same.
A bit of Bobby Short trivia: does anyone remember the TV commercial for the perfume “Charlie?” Model Shelley Hack, who would later join “Charlie’s Angels,” sashayed through the commercial, and Bobby Short sang the jingle: “There’s a fragrance that’s here to stay and they call it Chah-leee!” You saw him at the piano singing, “Kind of young, kind of WOW!”
God, I do remember that commercial!
A classy gentleman – he’ll be missed.
I remember it well. She did not sashay. She galumphed.
A great performer has been stilled. Even the loss of his voice really didn’t stop Bobby. He thought of himself as first and foremost a musician.
I had the happy accident of playing for him twice at private party gigs in NYC with my jazz trio. Each time, he stood by for a number or 2, not schmoozing or tablehopping, and each time he came by afterwards and quietly rasped:
“HEY, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!”
Coming from Bobby Short…that meant something.
Bye, Bobby! Thanks for the music!
This is one of those “makes me doubly sorry” threads because I thought he had already passed… :smack:
He was also a decent character actor; his episodes of Heat of the Night were well beyond what most “special non-acting guest stars” accomplish.
Another close to another NY era…but the guy had one hell of a run!
I had just read awhile back that he had reconsidered his “retirement” and said he would continue to go on playing as long as he could.
Bobby Short was truly a NYC legend.
Hey, Eve! Good to see you!
If you say she galumphed, then she galumphed. I remember the commercial more because Bobby Short was in it than Shelley Hack.
