Cable Modem Sometimes Won't Load Graphics

A few weeks ago, I finally switched over to a cable modem after using AOL dial-up for four years and love the differences in speed. However, sometimes the thing absolutely refuses to load graphics, no matter how long I keep a window open.

I never had this problem with AOL… even if it took forever to load, it would load. What could be the problem?

Loading time off the net can be limited in two ways; either by the data rate of your connection or the data rate of the server you are looking at. What it sounds like, is that you have run into a server that does not want to send graphics, either because it does not have them or some other arcane reason.

It might also be that you sometimes have your browser set to display graphics, and sometimes do not. Or that you lack the ability to view certain image types.

There is not adequate information in the OP to be truly helpful. E.g., OS, browser, etc.

Problems might be:
Leftover gunk from AOL. It messes up winsock stuff.
The cable connection is flaky and really slowing down at times.
Something wrong with the browser.
Something wrong with the OS.
Something wrong at the ISP end.

etc.

Note that the question in the OP is (nearly) non-sensical. The cable modem doesn’t care what bits are passing thru it. Bits are bits. (It only cares about “where”.)

A modem, cable or otherwise, does not “know” the difference among graphics data, text data, numerical data, etc. To a modem, it’s all data.

Don’t always jump to the conclusion that it’s your cable modem either. With broadband also comes an Ethernet card. At first my USB Ethernet card did not want to work and I wound up using an internal PCI one for a while.

Same as above, your cable modem can not be the direct cause of graphics not loading. It may be the case the server is slow, or just ‘forgot’ that it needed to send you some information. If pictures aren’t coming up, just try reloading the page, that may or may not help.
