Graphics are hosed - SDMB only

My browser keeps showing those little “x” in the box thingys instead of graphics next to threads and for those buttons under each post, causing text wrap problems, etc. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you fix it? I apologize if this is the wrong forum or this has been hased over and over…

I had that at work today all day but things are normal here at home. It’s dialup here and ISDN via a network at the office.

I meant to say this is happening at work (ISDN), but at home (DSL), it’s fine…

I’m getting it in work. It’s been like this for most of the day

I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary yesterday and I don’t see anything today.

I don’t know why you’re having problems.

I don’t know if it’s at my end but no images are loading. All the reply/quote icons etc show as a white box with a x in them. Text is all fine just the icons.

Exactly how An Arky describes. TwistofFate is experiencing the same thing.

Hmm you’re not seeing though

I’m having the same issue. No biggie but it’s rather annoying to read posts with all these red x’s.

Works fine at home.

Strange.

Could it be some thing to do with a change made and how it interacts with a firewall/proxy server as most people people seeing it seem to be in work?

Same problem started here, on public library computer.

Hmm. I’ll kick this over to the techs, but no promises.

Ditto on this issue. Page loads are about 5X slower than normal, too. I’m on other vB boards at the same time without any problems, just here.

Cheers TubaDiva.

I’m at home now and it’s all fine if that means anything

I use the same browser at home BTW.

I’ve had the same problem with SDMB graphics timing out for about a day or so.

Jerry sez:

"It’s probably a problem with certain user’s corporate firewalls. Sean is making changes to the underlying SDMB configuration including moving all the board graphics delivery to a separate (smaller) web server. It’s thttpd instead of Apache. The graphics are being served from a different port, 8080, instead of port 80. More than likely the 8080 port is being blocked by certain firewall configurations. I’ll kick this over to Sean but the whole point of doing this is to increase the performance of the SDMB. "

Sean is Sean Phelan, another member of the Reader technical staff.

He also says:

“The SDMB right now is basically consuming all of the Reader’s bandwidth. We are going to have to throttle down the performance of the SDMB in order for us to deliver bandwidth to our other users.”

Hope this explains a lot of what’s been going on around here. It does explain the “569” error I got on the site today.

Also explains why I’ve been having to reload all the graphics every time I visit the Board. Hopefully it saves bandwidth in the long term, though.

DING!!!

My company’s firewall blocks damn near everything other than port 80. I’ll betcha that’s the issue.

If right-clicking on the placeholder and selecting ‘show picture’ (in IE, that is - I don’t know the procedure in other browsers) results in the image being loaded, then the problem may not be with the board, but with some aspect of the browser or the method of connection - it used to happen a lot to me when I had a shared ISDN connection - the proxy server was at times equally sharing the connection between so many people that the time taken for a large page to fully load was exceeding some kind of timeout.

Seems like the port thing may be it. I’m at home, and it’s fine, though slow as usual.

Hey, I’m all for saving bandwidth. How about archiving old stuff somewhere else?Or how about deleting or archiving those honking thousand post threads? Ooh, ooh! I know! What about limiting posters to, say, 5 posts a day? Would that help?

Or perhaps this: The Chicago Reader isn’t up to handling something like this board without help.

Tell you what: I got $50 right here. Anybody else? We could donate enough to help the Reader buy something to replace the Commodore 64 they have now…

LOL!

Is this a done deal or just in the testing phase?

I can’t bypass my proxy and the graphics take a while to timeout, thus taking up all my browser connections.

It makes other browsing almost impossible while waiting on the board.
