On my parents’ computer (which I’m using now), IE often loads the small red “x” for a valid graphic. For instance, I just visited CNN and the main graphic did not load. However, when I selected “Show Picture,” the graphic appeared. Not all graphics fail to appear, just a few. It’s like the browser stops waiting for everything to appear before it decides that all available information has arrived.
Is there anything that I can do to fix this? I’m on a cable modem with a hub/router. Thanks.
I’m using IE version 5. Go to the Help menu, then click on Internet Options. Click on the Advanced tab and scroll down to Multimedia. One of the checkboxes says “Show Pictures.” It’s probably unchecked, so check it. Hopefully that will work for you. Good luck.
Assuming that some graphics load and some don’t for you … the server (the place where the images are being served from) will time out after a period. Any image that hasn’t been received by then IE will show as the red X. It’s not your connection speed, it’s the speed of the server. When you do a Show Picture, you are initiating a new request, so the image will come down before the server times it out. Generally occurs on very heavy trafficked sites.
