Caddy Shack question

OK, today on another website I was watching the top 12 drinking scenes in movies.
One of the movies mentioned was Caddy Shack with the following caption following the video clip of Ty Webb doing his tequila shot:

Huh? I my world he snorted salt (after all it came out of a salt shaker) and threw the tequila over his shoulder. No snorting salt doesn’t make sense, but neither does keeping cocaine in a salt shaker.

How did you fellow dopers interpret this? Do you assume Ty Webb was being wacky and snorting salt because it’s funny, or was he clever in keeping cocaine in a salt shaker?

Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H22q1iDOKA

I always assumed he snorted salt.

FWIW, Hunter Thompson wrote about a salt shaker full of cocaine in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas years before Caddyshack was filmed.

Still … in the *Caddyshack *world, Ty is just goofy enough to snort salt as if it were cocaine. The list maker up there is misguided if you ask me. Maybe he didn’t realize it was a farce. You’d think the dancing gopher would have tipped him off.

I always assumed it was salt.
The joke being that the typical way to do it is slam the tequila and throw a pinch of salt over your shoulder. Ty being Ty does the opposite and snorts the salt while throwing the tequila over his shoulder.

Salt. There was nothing in that scene that is said or done that leads the viewer to believe it was cocaine, from what I remember.

I always thought he was tossing the tequila over his shoulder so that he would stay sober while she got plastered. The snorting bit was just a red herring.

I just noticed that Lacey is chewing gum in that scene.

Yep, tequila and bubblegum.

No - you lick the salt, bite the lime (or lemon), then drink the tequila, just like Lacy does it. Or salt, then tequila, then fruit. I’ve never seen anyone throw the salt over their shoulder.

Wasn’t Chevy a fairly notorious cokehead around the time Caddyshack was made? ISTR hearing that he was coked up during most of the filming as well.

 In my world it’s salt, tequila, lemon. Ty was being a goof (and letting Lacy get drunk).

Lick it, pound it, suck it. In that order. For anything.

Excepting respite care and raising puppies.

I really have to wonder sometimes whether movie reviewers actually watch the movies they review or just look at snippets. I recall reading a review of Caddyshack in which the reviewer spoke of this ‘ridiculous fake gopher that wouldn’t fool a two-year-old’.

Salt.

“My uncle says you have a screw loose,” says Lacey.

Someone with a loose screw would snort salt. Especially if he says he feels like a hundred dollars, and sings a love song with the lyrics, “I was born to love you/I was born to lick your face/I was born to rob you/But you were born to rob me first…”

I always thought it was cocaine. It went along with the notion that Ty was stupid rich - he had cheques for $10,000 lying around uncashed, and salt shakers full of cocaine. He snorted it as if it’s cocaine - salt would murder your nose.

You also have to remember that when Caddyshack was written, there was a much more permissive attitude towards drugs, and no one was shocked by a sympathetic character in a movie snorting cocaine in a funny way.

I never considered that it was salt he was snorting. That just makes no sense to me, even as comedy.

Wouldn’t Lacy notice that it was coke?

it would explain AH-NANANANANANANANANANANANANANANANA a lot more.

Hey, don’t knock it until … er, okay. Go ahead.
Seems like a waste of good bubblegum.

Not only is it true about chevy chase but the director Ramis spoke recently about the amount if cocaine they did duuring filming. I bet it was in the salt shaker

O rly? :dubious:

How recently?
