Caddyshack Golf

Not sure if this is MPSIMS or the Game Room, but since it’s more the former than the latter, I’m putting it here.

Remember the scene in Caddyshack where the Bishop is so intent on playing that he goes out to play in a thunderstorm? Well, except for the thunder and lightning, that was the game we played today. We’ve had rain here for the last number of days, and a couple of friends and I, all of whom had been planning to play golf this weekend, said, “screw it; we’re playing,” and off we went.

Yep, it rained. For 18 holes, it rained. Golfers know what is meant by “casual water,” but today, the course was so waterlogged that we were lucky to find “casual land.” Sand bunkers were turned into mini-water hazards. Water hazards had formed in the middle of fairways, complete with four-foot splashes when we hit into them. Because all the water slowed down our shots and didn’t allow the ball to roll, we were taking far more shots to get to the green than we normally would; and when we got to the green, more putts. When we holed out, there was another splash, because the hole was full of water. And as we walked, all you could hear was the “squish, squish, squish” of our footsteps.

But we all agreed that we had a great round. We were pretty much the only party out there. Nobody in front slowing us down; nobody behind us hurrying us up. We could take our time, try a shot again (first one counts, second one is only practice and doesn’t count), and just enjoy the game.

It was a great round, and even though we all got soaked, we all agreed we had fun. I don’t know if anybody else has had a great time playing golf in the rain, but we sure did.

I can’t resist
the Priest misses the shot(looks up at the sky) FUCK YOU!
lightning strikes him down
just kills me
but it does sound like a great round
by the way any scores?

Only one of us broke 100, but only by two strokes. The rest of us were on the high side of that. Oh well. I’m betting that the next time we all play, and regardless of our scores, we won’t have as much fun as we did today.

Ok, I reaaaly should be going to bed.

But since we had a raging blizzard (complete with snow, blowing snow, slush and snow covered traffic light) up here in Calgary yesterday, you will forgive me if I have trouble summoning the requisite amount of sympathy  .

Anyway, on the topic of golfing in inclement weather:

Did you know that if you’re caught in a thunderstorm, you can hold up a 1-iron, should your bag feature such a formidable club, in the air to avoid being struck by lightening?

…because even God can’t hit a one iron…

continuing with divine involvement in Golf,

A man with a bad temper was paired up for a round of golf with the local parish priest. Everytime the man made a bad shot or missed a put, he would curse: “Goddamit, I missed!”

Finally, the priest had had enough: “My son, if you continue using the Lord’s name in vain, he will punish you somehow…” But the man didn’t pay any heed and kept on cursing.

Finally, on the eighteeth green, the man misses a put for par, and curses a blue streak

…and from over the horizon, dark menacing clouds gather at unearthly speed. It starts to rain violently. A deafening crack of thunder explodes and an enournous lightening bolt…

…completely incinerates the priest.

then, there was a loud booming voice heard over the whole course:

…Goddamit, I missed!

I have a 1-iron in my bag. Just in case, y’know…

I enjoy playing in the rain, though I’ll admit I’ve never played in that type. I really like it when there’s no one else around, and the best way to do that is when it rains. Plus it doesn’t matter if I don’t break 100 since I don’t do that anyway.

I’ve never started a round in the rain but I’ve finished rounds in heavy rain (what can I say - I’m cheap, and you don’t get rain checks after you’ve finished a certain number of holes).

I once drowned a cell phone on the golf course just by wearing it on my hip while finishing a round during a downpour. Nowadays I keep a cellphone-sized waterproof container in my golf bag just to keep it from happening again.

I detest playing in the rain, but given the circumstances mentioned I can see how you’d have enjoyed yourself.

A couple of years ago one of the people in the foursome in front of me was struck by *lightning. They immediately got everyone off the course. I was upset. I figured the chances of a second person being struck by lightning on the same course, during the same storm, were astronomical!

*He lived.

Gambler’s Fallacy (or the Shell Hole Fallacy, for those former & current infantry among us).

Now, playing in the snow, or in the dark-now those are the way the game was meant to be played.

Heh - Jim and I were speculating on golfers just yesterday. I said that the only thing that keeps golfers off the course was the idea that holding up a golf club will attract lightning, and Jim said that isn’t enough deterrent for some of them.
