Caffeine in Zero-Sugar Sunkist Orange Soda

How can I find out the caffeine content of Sunkist Zero Sugar Orange soda. The 12 oz can I’m drinking from says it has 19 mg. The box the cans came in says there is none. Online sources report both and also report 57 mg for a 16 oz bottle.

Their website says 19mg. Conveiently, 19 x 3 = 57, so I’m betting there’s a serving size math error somewhere.

Have you looked at their actual site instead of an ‘online source’?

27 mg for the 16.9 bottle, works out to 19 mg for 12 oz.

Do you have a picture of that? The only boxes I can find online list it as one of the ingredients.

According to this site Does Sunkist Have Caffeine? If So, How Much? - Caffeine Gurus Sunkist Diet Orange had 41 mg of caffeine in a 12 ounce can, while the new Zero Sugar variety has 19 mg, same as the regular Sunkist Orange Soda.

That’s one of the sites I read, but I still don’t understand how Sunkist’s can and box can disagree about content.

Do you have a picture of the box or can you link to it?

Contact them directly. There should be a website and/or a phone number on the box.

Sorry I mis-read the box. OldGuy eyesight ain’t what it used to be. Caffeine was listed much after other ingredients right after the abbreviation Inc. It was a bit smudged and I saw the “nc” as “no”.

Does all orange soda have caffeine or just Sunkist?

Because I always thought orange soda was caffeine free.

I’m pretty sure it’s just Sunkist.

According to this, it’s just Sunkist and something called “Bawls Orange” that have caffeine.

Crush and Fanta don’t, and while not on the list, I know Faygo Orange doesn’t have caffeine either.

Back in my “I need a hangover cure” days, Sunkist was highly prized for being the only caffeinated orange soda (among my circle of friends).

I was of the same mind, and couldn’t say where I picked that up.

As noted, most are, but Sunkist has historically been the noteworthy exception. I had Sunkist orange soda as a client 20+ years ago, and that was a point of difference for them – they didn’t actively promote it, but it was something that a portion of their user base knew, and they drank Sunkist for that reason. (Though, compared to Coke or Pepsi, regular Sunkist has only about half as much caffeine.)

Similarly, most root beers don’t contain caffeine, but Barq’s does – though, apparently, Diet Barq’s doesn’t.

Caffeine is claimed by some to add “bite” to sodas. Hence “Barq’s has bite.”

But I think that’s nonsense. Caffeine is an addictive drug. They want to get people hooked on their junk.

Note that some groups such as LDS eschew it, so they have to weigh the pluses and minuses in adding it.

It’s not much of a minus, unless your brand is primarily sold in Utah. As of 2022, only 1.2% of Americans self-identify as Mormon.

Interestingly, the LDS prohibition is specifically “hot drinks,” which was originally interpreted as coffee and tea; some Mormons have extended that prohibition as including all caffeinated drinks, though that’s apparently technically not an official church position.

Other religious groups might also eschew caffeine, as do some people, for health reasons, or just as a matter of choice, but the percentage is still pretty small: this study indicates that 94% of Americans drink caffeinated beverages.

I thought the same thing!
