No worries, hon…when you live within spitting distance of the Canadian border, (well, I could if I stood in my friend’s backyard and tried REALLY hard, that is…) you CONSIDER Canadian dollars to be US dollars. More or less, that is!
Thank you to all who have responded so warmly to this effort. So far we have received $740.00 via PayPal, and numerous people have asked for an address to send checks or phone cards/gift certificates.
Actually, I think the message says that the recipient “may” deny the payment. I don’t think that means that it will be denied. So I think Paypal will work just fine, but someone please tell me if I’m wrong…
My quote on “monetary instruments” was referring to foreign cash and checks on foreign banks. I think the Paypal account as Scotti has it set up will, in fact, work just fine with the foreign money, but I’m not sure…Scotti?
I can’t say I’ve ever met CajunMan or DrMatrix or even posted in a thread that they’ve been in (tho’ I could be wrong…) I have in my year and a half on the boards seen their wonderful contributions to it and shot a little paypal their way.
Maybe things aren’t so bad in SoCal (with respect to DrMatrix. We had a couple of programmer positions at my company which are now filled, unfortunately, but it did take the project manager quite some time to fill the slots. Those positions are no longer vacant, but maybe it’s an indication of a slightly better job market out here.
I’m an unemployed computer guy myself, so I can sympathize. Luckily, my wife works, so I can spare a few bucks. Cajun Man and DrMatrix are great assets to this board, and, while I’ve never corresponded with them personally, I’m sure other Dopers can attest that they are wonderful people IRL. They surely deserve much better than the situation in which they find themselves.
Well, anyway, here comes some Acadiana cash for the Cajun Man, straight from good 'ol Teche Bank (via PayPal).
Actually, I always wondered how people used credit cards to make payment through PayPal. It turns out that the “quasi-cash” option allows you to use CC ( instead of being Monopoly money, which is what I had pictured in my mind :D) Bear in mind, however, that some CC companies charge a fee to do this.
Also, there is a box on the “Send Money” PP screen that allows you to choose USD. I assume this means that you CAN use other currencies and PP will convert it.
Mind you, I am not CERTAIN of this, having never used either option. But that is what it looks like to me.
I have never had a problem with depositing Canadian checks or MO…if you specify USD, they charge your account the equivilant of USD, if you don’t MY bank converts it to whatever it is WORTH in USD. I think. Anyway, like I said…we get a LOT of Canadian checks and currency around here, so the banks are used to dealing with it. Other currency I am not so sure about.
I’m sending a phonecard along with a check (so PayPal doesn’t take a bite.) It very obviously feels like a card in the envelope so I hope it makes it there ok.
I don’t need no cash. I’ll take a Quasi-Scotti instead!
Hey! Y’all know that movie It’s A Wonderful Life? Well, that’s us, ain’t it? We’re not saving a bank or our town, but we’re helping a couple of our own, and don’t that make y’all feel terrific?
Does me!
Y’all and the G’Dopers are the absolute best! I’d french-kiss each and every one of ya if you were here right now!
