As thinksnow said in another thread: “Geez, Dopers jobs are dropping like flies in a jarbaby porn thread!”
So are you laid off? Hate where you work? Willing to help us find a job?
I’m hoping that we can work together to help and support our fellow dopers. If you want, post your résumé and other stats. Or just tell us your sob story. If you’re responsible for hiring people, be a dear and give some feedback on a résumé or two.
I’ve been laid off officially since July 15th, but I was given a month before that to look. My savings are adequate to keep me going a long time, but I can’t buy unnecessary items like furniture that I would like to get or make any long-term plans. This is a real pain since I’m in a LDR with rjk; thankfully I can get free stand-by trips through my Mom, but it is still a strain on our relationship.
So here’s my stats -
[list]Position desired: Oracle Developer
Area: Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX
Skills: Oracle, C, Unix
[resume information deleted by TubaDiva, drop her an email instead. your humble TubaDiva, who wants everyone to be safe]
Sob stories will garner sympathy! All comments will be greatly appreciated! Job offers even more appreciated!
I work at Oracle in the consulting division. One of my responsibilities is to review candidate resumes and determine if we would like to interview them. My group is North America Program Management, not sure if you would be qualified for this particular group but I did see some things on your resume that could use tweaking.
Well today I just found out that the position I’ve been temping in since March (and have been formally offered) might not be funded unless a grant the agency has applied for is accepted. I won’t know until probably the end of the month what’s going to happen. I love working here. I love the people, the atmosphere and the work. But I can’t afford health insurance for myself and my daughter* on this salary, nor can I afford to send myself back to school and I desperately wanted to go back this January. I was really looking forward to the wonderful health insurance plan and the tuition assistance.
So it looks like I’ll have to start looking for another job. If anybody needs an admin assistant with a wide range of skills (marketing, research, accounting, human resources, customer service) in DC and is willing to pay $35-40k, send me an email and I’ll send my resume.

Folks, we’re most sympathetic (I’m job hunting too, as a matter of fact, as soon as I finish moving), but this is not a good idea.
Zyada, it’s never a good idea to post a link to something with your real life information in it, not like this. It’s just not a safe thing to do. I have edited this information out of your post, if people want to send you an email to get this info, of course that’s your business.
We have in the past allowed people to do a bit of this kind of thing, both as employer and employee, BUT they wrote us first and cleared it with us in advance and there were limits on how it was handled, there has to be, this is not what we do in the normal course of events. We’re a lot of things, but this ain’t “hotjobs.”
I’m not looking for a job, but we’ve recently had someone quit, and we’re looking for another developer. Here’s the stats:
Senior level - 'round here that means 8 or so years of experience minimum.
WinNT/C++ experience
GUI experience a plus, but not necessary
The job’s in Colorado
That’s about it. Drop me a line if you’re interested.
Sorry about that Tuba. I really meant this to be more of a “Who’s out of a job and hows it going?” thread than a job board, but I got sidetracked. And I’m not sure what you saw on my resume that was personal?
Anyway, I’d like to hear from others who are out of work.
Zyada, I have to agree with TubaDiver on personal info not being safe to post. It was a grand idea, however, and may still generate some prospects through emails. I will offer up prayers to all who are in need of a job, or a better/different job.
To go with the intent of your post, I thought about putting down all that is going on with the bear family. However, Mr Bear is a more private person, and I’m not sure he would appreciate me telling all. So, I’ll just say this. We still have a roof over our heads, and God provides. Any and all prayers and good wishes would be more than welcome.
I managed to come up with the money for a business trip to Portland and leave Friday, returning on Wednesday of next week. I am self-employed, and need the training from this conference to build my business to a self-sustaining level. A few unexpected expenses came up after I purchased the non-refundable plane tickets, so now it looks like I will be coming home a rather hungry bear. Prayers and warm thoughts for this trip, and for my first-ever nervousness about flying would be greatly appreciated. Not to worry, I can afford a few missed meals, I am a purplebear, after all.
Zyada went to college in NacaDOHHHH-ches…Zyada went to college in NacaDOHHHHHHHHH-ches…!
Hey, I’m outta work still, too. But luckily for me, Unca Cecil, Little Ed, and TubaDiva swooped in and offered me this most excellent position as an Official Straight Dope Message Board Moderator!
I understand that, someday, I will receive a cool mug.
Magazine editor, unemployed since April 2, 2001. Slowly starving to death in New York City.
Excellent writer, good journalistic skills, broad knowledge of consumer electronics, home office, home networking, and related topics. Proficient in Mac and Windows applications, including Quark XPress and Adobe PageMaker.
Alternately, I’m willing to be a kept man, paid and housed for my sexual and other domestic services. Really, I’m quite good in bed, and I cook and clean as well.
I’ve only been out of work for 3 weeks, but it seems like longer. I signed on with a temp agency two weeks ago, and they haven’t come up with anything for me yet. Last time I temped, about 4 years ago, they had me working the day after I went in. I dunno what’s up with that.
Anyway, if anybody knows of any good leads in the DC area for a recent college grad with a degree in geology and a very eclectic work history, including military service, drop me a line.

Currently employed, but seeking a position in western Washington, anywhere between Seattle and Bellingham.
What the heck. I’ve got my headhunter looking, might as well hope some doper’ll take pity on me and offer me a job.
Currently in Austin, Texas, but willing and EAGER to move.
3D modeler and animator for PS2 and PC game platforms. Specializing in low- and mid-poly organic characters for FPS and RTS games. Good at texture work, too. Been in the industry over seven years.
I’m currently employed- and quite well, I might add. We’re just not doing the kinds of games I want to work on. Plus, I’d love to get out of Texas before next summer- I’ve lived here all my life, and I’m SERIOUSLY ready to live somewhere where the temperature doesn’t equal that of the surface of the sun during the summertime.
Texas Tech law student, taking the bar exam in July, looking for employment ANYWHERE. I’m in Texas, but more than willing to move where I’m wanted.
I’m not at the top of my class, but I don’t feel my grades accurately affect my abilities. I’ve received multiple scholarships and awards as a law student and as an undergrad, including a National Merit Scholarship.
Work experience: Before I went to law school, I worked for 5 years (part and full time) doing computer installations and repairs at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Concurrent with that (meaning, when I was back in New Mexico for summers and holidays), I worked as a communications technician and computer programmer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In short, I know my way around a computing machine. Currently, I’m working as an intern at TTU Student Legal Services, becoming involved with everything from landlord/tenant disputes to divorces to immigration questions.
I’m the president of SASA (Second Amendment Student Association), the TTU Law student organization with the second-largest membership roster of all student orgs at the school. My area of greatest interest is intellectual property. To that effect, I’ve taken classes in mass media law, copyright, and patent, and will shortly be taking internet law.
The company I a working for is gettig ready to hire soon. Anyone who is interested, email me, and I will submit your resume to our HR dept. We have contracts all over the world, so not just DFW.

Wow, reading that over, I finally realize what I’m qualified to be.
