The Straight Dope Employment Agency, or who here needs a job?

I command a national guard Headquarters, Headquarters company in South Florida, in an infantry battalion. If you’re a guy and are a veteran, I’ve got work for E1’s through E7’s, and for those of you who are commissioned, I’ve got some officer slots open. Most of it’s part-time work, but I’ve got Plenty o’ full time opportunities right now, thanks to Operation Noble Eagle–mostly involving airport security. If you can get here and are otherwise qualified, I can bring you on pretty quickly.

On the enlisted side, I’ve got openings for scout/snipers, mortarmen, medics, cooks, truck drivers, mechanics, supply specialists, armorers, admin clerks, a chaplain’s assistant, NBC specialists. I’ve also got entry-level openings for guys who want to learn any of the above skills, 2 weekends/month and 2 weeks/year. We’ll pay for college.

I’ve got a full-time, permanent opening coming up in a couple of weeks for a supply technician, E-5 or above, preferably school-qualified or willing to go, pronto.

If you’re not prior service, I’ve still got openings, but it takes longer to bring you on and you’ll have to attend basic and AIT.

email me at panzermanpanzerman@hotmail.com if you want to know more.

What? Not in Florida? Ok. Contact the guard recruiter near you.

Soft-handed slackjaws who think they’re above military service please feel free to ignore this post.

What the heck…

I work in a Batch Monitoring environment, and have now for two years. I use CA-7 to monitor, and CA-11 for job restarts. I am familiar with Vantive, Tivoli, and have a passing knowledge of Maestro. Before this I spent 4 years working in a tape Library.

I have some JCL skills, some MVS and JES skills (although limited still). I hate my workplace, and many of my co-workers.

I would be willing to move, but would prefer to stay in Northern California. I learn very quickly, and work well in a group.

Anybody? Anybody?

Sigh…

I lose my job on the 13th of October…but hey…I’m just a lowly working man…you know…the kind with callouses on his hands. But there are plenty of jobs out there for a man with my qualifications aren’t there?
Aren’t there?

Laid off in August from - gasp! - a web consultancy and design firm! Sad part is, I truly didn’t see it coming. We had two rounds of layoffs - I made the first, but the second time the reaper had it in for me. And I had just started writing the newsletter a couple of months before! Sob!

Anyhoo, I’m looking for an executive assistant/office manager-despot type position in Chicago. Strangely the market for despots is pretty tight. I was last making in the $40,000+ arena, but that’s gonna have to be negotiable these days…even though I am worth every penny.

And I can put my ankles behind my neck. Where should I put that on my resume?

Check this company out, Lightnin. They are here in Ann Arbor and my husband interviewed with them. He wasn’t the guy they were looking for (alas) but he was seriously impressed with the atmosphere there. It’s a small firm–when he interviewed they were focusing on some sort of racing game but that was some time ago. Ann Arbor is a pretty cool college town–it would be a nice transition from Austin. Plus we need more Michigan Dopers!

I was laid-off last Wednesday. sigh

I’m looking for work as an accounting assistant or a junior accountant, although I may take one of those student jobs at school. However, they don’t pay as well and I just hate scrambling for money.

Laid off Friday 28 Sep 01 because the honchos sold out to a competitor who decided to consolidate operations.

Was looking at relocating, but Mrs Boxcar is enjoying her work and has announced that I am welcome to move anywhere I want to, but unless the new job pays enough that she doesn’t have to work, she ain’t moving.

So, looking for a good outside Biz to Biz sales or operations management position where I can base out of Fort Worth.

Just finishing up a career management course courtesy of my former employer. If you can go to one I highly recommend it. They really showed me how to bring my resume up to date and what the new conventions are.

Rastahomie, visit Thomson Learning for college textbook publishing careers. They have several editorial positions from Developmental to Aquisitions in Belmont, CA, Cincinnati, OH, and Boston, MA. It’s a fun industry.

Good luck all…

Poleaxed Sept. 28 after 2.5 years as a PR and marketing director for a small (successful) software company.

Skills:
Media buying
Press release creation, scheduling, distribution andfollow-up
Editorial and industry relationship management
Collateral development
vendor management

I secured a 38% increase in media coverage for the company, launched a brand new product and industy subset, led the company to market dominance in a key demographic and planned vertical market expansion strategies for new product lines/existing product penetration. Oversaw and maintained a $1M marketing and PR budget, including trade shows, ads, promotional activities and special events.

In addition, I’m personable, charming and extremely adept at building personalized professional relationships. However, I’m not as cheap as the cut-rate PR firm the new VP brought in to replace me.

That being said, anyone in the greater Phoenix area who needs their image created, boosted, expanded or maintained could do way worse than to ring me up.

Happy hunting, Dopers. It’s a tough world, but we’re all tougher.

Lightnin’, drop me an e-mail ('tis in my profile), will ya? I’ve got a buddy who might be able to help you out.

Been out of work since May. One year of Help Desk for Verizon Online DSL and a year for an internal help desk for a law firm. I have my A+ Certification, and am taking the N+ and CCNA tests later this year. I have dealt with a majority of types of software and hardware configurations, and have been promoted in both of my jobs.

To show how desperate I am, I am really willing to do anything for money at this point. Help Desk would be great, but if someone needs someone to work retail or labor I would.

[/buzzkill]

Well, why not. I need a new environment to maintain my sanity.

Senior-level project engineer. Strong background in all aspects of electronics manufacturing, including starting-up overseas factories and working with contract manufacturers. Senior manufacturing engineer or project manager-type position desired. Dallas, Texas area - preferably Richardson or Plano.

Ok, I have registered in two temp agencies but one has gone for 2 months without giving me a lead. I moved to Arizona and I had enough money to be unemployed for several months, but time is up and of course the IT market did go down. Luckily I am single and my needs are few so if anybody in the Phoenix area or in Maricopa County is interested in that seemingly impossible combination of a cheap but good systems support person I am that!

My strengths are in Help desk, Network support, PC/Mac Server/workstation repair and maintenance (7 years)

Multimedia and computer animation (3 years)

Some technical writing and Linux (Samba), I am learning Web design too.

I can also settle for a general office job with my knowledge of Microsoft Office or Sun’s Star office. Also I speak and write Spanish.

(Please help or I will not be able to go to the Dopefest in LA! )

Hi FallenAngel!

How did you get an agent? I just finished my second book, and damn it, I’m ready to be published (for my fiction.)

Without an income for 3 years.
Worked many retail jobs, also a secretary for soem time(temp).
High schoolg rad who took recordkeeping and got A’s in Algebra.
Ohio area.

I’m not unemployed yet, but there’s a company-wide meeting today that I do not have a good feeling about.

I’m a Java developer (also other languages), on both windows and Unix systems. One year of experience since school, as well as several internships.

I’ll post later this afternoon whether I’m still employed.

I’d say we’re looking for project managers and a marketing assistant (writing press releases and such) and a CAD person except the only responses I ever get are along the lines of “But I don’t want to move to Chicago’s western suburbs!” so I won’t bother.
