No, I’m not. They didn’t wait until the company-wide meeting at least. Sooooo. Anyone got connections for me?
So why the heck aren’t any of you in the Toronto area? I’m still looking for managers, business analysts and developers (AI and/or Japanese technical background a definite plus). Just being a Doper would put most of you ahead of most of the candidates I’ve seen lately.
Sigh.

Check this company out, Lightnin. They are here in Ann Arbor and my husband interviewed with them. He wasn’t the guy they were looking for (alas) but he was seriously impressed with the atmosphere there. It’s a small firm–when he interviewed they were focusing on some sort of racing game but that was some time ago. Ann Arbor is a pretty cool college town–it would be a nice transition from Austin. Plus we need more Michigan Dopers! **[/QUOTE]
Thanks, Cranky, you babe, you. I’ll be sending them my info tonight!
I feel for you. You’d think that a job market as large as Chicagoland would have more Dopers, especially since this is the Fatherland. And an important thing I look for in an employee is my own ability to stand being in the same room all day. Dopers are way ahead there.
DC area, data entry operator; I’m good with Word and Excel. Also an excellent proofreader since misspelled words and grammatical errors just jump out at me.
The most I’ve ever earned is $14 an hour; usually about $10 or $11.
My temp agency has not produced a single assignment for me since March, and my savings account is rapidly shrinking.
Position must be accessible by public transit, preferably in DC, Arlington, Alexandria or Silver Spring.
(I’ve also done a fair amount of filing but would prefer to get away from that; however if that’s all that is available I’ll do it.)
Hoping to earn enough money to move to Chicago next year.
Calling all (east of the Mississippi) Dopers needing weekend work:
It’s marketing/promotions work. It’s borrrring. Make great money though, and totally reimbursed travel. It isn’t anything you’d want to do for a long time, but it’s good to get you through the rough times.
Drop me an email if you’re interested and I’ll tell you more about it.
Acco
Good Lord.
What we have here is an entire COMPANY of people. We’ve got engineers, marketing people, tech support people, at least one working man with callouses, data entry people, etc. etc.
All we need is an idea, folks. Anyone? I’m thinking something software-esque, since we have lots o’ geeks. And something that would allow us to work from all over the country, right, since not everyone wants to move.
HmmmMMmmmmm…!
My only two real skills are artistic creativity and martial arts. And I think this venture would be much more interesting if I could be a legbreaker. Sign me up, Thad!
This is just the sort of thing I e-mailed TubaDiva about not a week ago (well, maybe just over a week ago)
I am currently living in the UK, but my sweetheart (Hi Brynda) is in Detroit. I want to move to Detroit and find a job there. Any and all help would be appreciated.
The Stats.

Cheers
Rick
RickQ (and other job seekers if you haven’t heard of it yet), one resource that might be very helpful for you is America’s Job Bank http://www.ajb.org/. There are listings for all over the US, so you will probably find lots of listings for the Detroit area; you can also post your resume for employers to see.
Thanks Geobabe, I’ll certainly have a look
Along the same lines, a friend pulled together a page of job-related web sites while he was looking for work. See it here. Best of luck to everyone.
I keep a list of job sites to check; I’m up to 33. If anyone’s interested, I can post them, or email them to you
Hey, what the heck…I’m a college student, and a geek to boot. I’m graduating in May, so all of a sudden, job-hunting has become important to me. I know all of Microsoft Office and most of Visual Studio (I haven’t done anything in FoxPro, although I’d be interested in learning). I know C++, SAS, Visual Basic, HTML, SQL, ASP (and related scripting languages). I know threading, MFC, and relational database design. I have experience in statistical analysis and probabilistic modelling, and am interested in the challenges of large dataset management and processing. I have a slight interest in moving off the east coast, but I’m flexible on that. However, I’m not too keen on a job that involves a lot of travel. My resume is available to any interested parties through the e-mail address in my profile.
A friend of mine from college went to a big Christian Writer’s convention in Colorado and took a rough outline of my idea with her. She milled about, showing it to the Big Cheeses, and getting turned down, until she found the guy who would later become my agent. Apparently, he was beside himself with anticipation at the prospect of being my agent, and the rest just fell into place from there.
I wish I could help you better, throatshot. BTW, what happened with your first book?
