The Seeking Employment/Employees Thread

I was asked to include a short note in this post that the thread has the blessing of the staff. So I just did.
OK, I know we’ve got people here who have lost their jobs and I expect there are even more who know other people who have lost jobs. Further, it’s been my experience that networking it one of the best ways to get job seekers and vacant positions together. Can we try that here?

Yeah, there’s a bit of a selfish motive for this thread. My husband, the one-shot poster fairychatdad needs to hire some people and so far, he’s not having a lot of luck. Two of his best prospects got raises from their current employers to stay. I did put a couple of Dopers in touch with him already through some off-line correspondence. I don’t know what’s going with those - all I know is he got the resumes.

The jobs are located in Havre de Grace, Md. (Hi, Dave and Ginger!! ) What he’s looking for are 2 Mechanical Engineers and an Electrical Engineer – he’s willing to take on recent graduates or people with minimal experience. He figures he can teach them what they lack in industrial background. He also needs a Maintenance Manager with injection molding or hydraulics experience – someone who can manage people, schedules, preventive maintenance and generally keep the equipment up and running.

If you or someone you know might be interested in any of these positions, drop me a line at my email below and I’ll give the appropriate information through that channel. Honestly, if I wasn’t so close to retirement from my current job, I’d give serious thought to these. I’ve toured the plant, and I believe they’re getting ready to do an expansion soon. I seem to recall he told me they’re about to be awarded a big contract.

So, that’s my spiel. And anyone else looking to fill a job or find a job, come on in and network.

I still need a full time job. I have been substitute teaching for my old position. Last week they hired another teacher to fill my old job. I’m still subbing once and a while like when this newbie has to go to training.
But I’m not hopeful that they will hire me for my old job any more.
So, I’m in Southern CA and have massive experence working with kids and youths. I have worked in high-pressure situations and have CPR and 1st aid certification.
Thanks FCM.

Thanks, FairyChatMom, for starting this, and staff, for permitting it. Gosh, FCM, I didn’t think there was a soul in the country having trouble hiring anyone; I thought the difficulty resided just with the jobseekers. Good luck to your husband and his hiring.

My husband is a topnotch, experienced designer of piping and plant facilities. He has worked in biotechnology, food and paper, and petrochemical industries. He is an expert in AutoCAD 14 and 2000, and has been trained in Microstation. Good with all the usual office applications, Word, Excel, Outlook and so forth. He’s an extremely energetic, problem-solving kind of person.

He’s looking for work in the Bay Area of California. We live a little to the south of Silicon Valley, and he will take work as far north as Oakland and San Francisco.

Thanks for any leads, everyone.

I’m a multimedia designer with web experience, Cold Fusion experience, Video Editing experience and some limited 3d experience.

I’m looking for something in one of those fields, keeping in mind that I also have very strong English skills.

I’m in the Southern California area, but will accept anything in California - or Out Of State if we can work out a telecommuting scheme.

Thanks for any leads, everyone.

I’m looking for a job in London. I currently work for the ambulance service planning ambulance routes and I have experience in logistics, working under pressure and all kinds of admin/secretarial roles. I’m not looking for anything in particular, and I’d appreciate a heads-up in any kind of area.

One bump for the morning crowd…

Anyone got a nice, well-paying job for a night-owl HS grad? With very few skills?

…Yeah, I didn’t think so either, but it was worth a shot. Returns to filling out applications for retail work

I know that I won’t fill what fairychatdad’s looking for, but it can’t hurt to put my 2 cents in.

I’ve been out of work in Philadelphia since last October. I’ve got experience in office related positions (Admin Assist, Data Entry, that sort of thing) and Customer Service positions (5-6 years of CSR work… honestly, it’s not what I want to do but I’d be up for anything at this point). The only problem is that I’m going to need three weeks off in September for my wedding. That’s been my biggest problem thus far. I’m currently working through a temp company, though they haven’t actually found me anything yet. Hopefully soon.

Anyone that knows of anything they want to send my way, feel free.

The Feds hire people in a lot of different specialties. The agency I work for, the Census Bureau, tends to hire people with geek credentials of various sorts - mathematicians, statisticians, IT types, geographers, demographers, and so forth. The main employment page for the Federal government is here.

While the largest concentration of Federal jobs is in the DC area, there are Federal government offices, and jobs, all over the country.

True enough.

In August/September I’m slotted for an extra person. It’s a basic clerk-type job that requires so database experience. I’m not what you’d call a stern taskmaster and the pay will be in the high-20s low 30s.

The job will be located in Rockville, MD, just north of Washington DC.

Casual office. You’ll be in a bullpen environment with the rest of my staff (but not me…I’m the remote father figure).

I’ll come work for you, JC. I’ll even show leg.

If anyone knows of any telecommuting positions that can be done from my dining room in Pennsylvania and that aren’t necessarily 8-5 Monday through Friday, I’d appreciate a heads-up. I have awesome typing and data-entry skills (70+ wpm typing and 10K+ kph data entry), a medical background, and good spelling, grammar and editing abilities. I also know how to transcribe.

Also, Airman may be looking for a job soon.

ZING!

Hey! I’m looking! I’m in Vancouver, Canada, and right now I’m looking for a data-entry position, or entry-level office job. I’d happily do retail at this point.

I have eight years experience w/ data-entry, order-taking and filling, inventory-taking, shipping & receiving, filing, retail sales, warehousing, and customer support. (All at the same job.)

I’m having the devil’s own time getting back into the workforce, since I’ve been self-employed (graphic & web design) for four years since I got “downsized” along with almost everyone else in my department, which leaves a gap in my resume that appears to make employers nervous. (Or maybe it’s that they think I’d rather be self-employed and wouldn’t stick with a job – not the case, four years of hand-to-mouth is plenty enough for me!)

I’m very versatile, familiar with most common business applications, have a professional demeanor and a neat appearance. I have very strong customer service and interpersonal skills. (If it’s helpful, I’m also adept with Photoshop, Premiere, Quark, and 3D Studio.)

I’m moving to Chicago. Want to hire me?

I’m looking for a job in Chicago, and I have lots of experience as an administrative assistant, graphic designer and newspaper editor. I also have experience in office management and customer service. I’m great with all MS Office applications, Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, and various database software.

I’ll consider myself available, if anyone has something in Atlanta or a telecommute kinda position. Or freelance work. I have lots of writing experience, some editing experience, some web design, retail sales, some general business stuff, and I can pretty much teach myself anything. Email me if you need more specifics or just feel the need to email me.

Out of work Puget Sound area doper checking in (thanks FairyChatMom)!

I was the Tech Support Department for a small software company for the last 12 years (we had an Xtension to QuarkXPress, so I am an XPress guru on both Windows and the Macintosh). Before that I managed a bookstore and before that, well, I was told not to mention what I did before that because no one wants to hire and old bat.

Since it’s been almost a year since our company went under, I am willing to look at just about anything with decent health insurance. Have a cougar to feed? Need someone to answer your desktop publishing software questions? Run your store? Maintain your alpaca exhibit? Edit your manual? Layout your book? Answer your phone? Shelve your library books?

I have actually applied for all of the above. So far, no dice.

Any lawyers/law school graduates out there interested in a writing career?

My employer is looking to fill a few positions right now. We’re a publishing company based in South Florida, and we need another writer in one of our legal departments. You don’t need to be a member of the Bar, but you must have a JD. Past writing or journalism experience is a huge plus.

We also need a journalist to edit a couple of newsletters, an administrative assistant, and a recruiter in the human resources department.

E-mail me if you’re interested in any of the positions. I’ll be happy to give you the contact info.

Great idea for a thread, FairyChatMom.

What the heck… I’m not out of a job yet, but the way my company is going it’s probably just a matter of time so…
Anyone need a DBA in the Wash, D.C. area? I know Oracle 8i and SQL2000, mostly Win NT background but I deal with big - terabyte sized - distributed databases on a regular basis. Extra points if you can help me before they reinstitute the dress code causing my morale to fall even farther into the toilet.
