My SO is a C++ programmer in Unix and Windows with a master’s in software engineering. He’s been out of work for nine months and looking for something in the RI, Boston, MA area. I can promise you’ll get a cool guy who is a hard worker–and I’ll throw in a plate of my famous reese cup peanut butter cookies, too
Curiously, Lady Chance might be interested in you. I can make no promises but she’s senior in a software design firm owned by one of the larger defense contractors.
How would you feel about Crystal City?
Again, no promises. But it’s what she does.
See that email link down there? Boy, wouldn’t it be a good thing if you clicked on it.
FairyChatMom-
Thank you.
This will be a networking thread I am sure everyone will remember!
I’m going to need a job after I move in July. I’m moving to Longview, Texas and need a job somewhere around there, Tyler, Marshall etc. I haven’t done much besides retail customer service (I currently work at a Staples Copy Center) and secretarial work (I’m assistant secretary and webmaster for a church - I get to keep the webmaster job after I move, but it doesn’t provide that much). I could do call center, customer service, data entry, office administration…
I’m probably going to end up applying to an Office Max or something. I hate having no applicable skills.
Now, in a perfect world I’d be proofreading for a newspaper, but I probably have a snowball’s chance at that until I can finish my degree, which I can’t do until I have the money, which I can’t get until I have a job…
Hi! I’m a 20 year old unemployed former college student. I decided to take a year off from school to work in the real world. My previous work experiences include pharmacy technician, camp counselor, TCBY ice cream person, and hospital volunteer. I’d love a position as a pharmacy technician because that’s what I was going to school for. I was a pharmacy major, but then I switched to Rehabilitation Science and Technology. I’ve got extensive knowledge of Windows 2000 OS, Office XP, limited knowledge of Mac OS 9.2 and OS X.2, and various other computer programs. I type pretty well and work hard at tasks that I am given… I’m located in Eastern PA, so if there’s anyone that wants to hire me please do!
Thanks FairyChatMom for a great thread!
I hope this does some good for people, but I have to admit, my motives were purely selfish. My spousal unit is seriously overworked, trying to do the jobs of several people that he doesn’t have yet. The engineers on his staff are equally overworked, and bringing in 3 or 4 good workers would make everyone’s life wonderful.
But then I can’t be completely selfish - I’m glad to see that others are seeking workers. Still, all you engineers or friends of engineers, think Havre de Grace! Become a MAD! The factory is just across the Susquehanna River from Cecil County - is that a sign or what?!?
Houston, Tx checking in.
Graduated last May with a M.S. in Forensic Science… Currently working in a research laboratory, but still looking for my first job in FS. 1+ years experience in DNA/microbiology laboratory.
These jobs seem difficult to find, and even if I do see one listed, it requires more forensic experience than I have. I would appreciate any help/advice from the awesome Doper community.
27 year old college grad (Creative Communications) checking in. Experienced in tradeshows, media relations, journalism, newsletters, layout and some design, public relations, event planning, promotions and writing.
Would love a job I can do from home, but willing to take it on the road too
I live in Winnipeg, Canada. Moving not so much an option (unless it was really, really good).
Hubby is a certified Mech.Eng.Tech. and worked as a service supervisor in a hydraulics shop. He is working as a designer right now (AutoCad) in HVAC, but he really prefers to be more hands on.
We’re still looking for a network admin based in the Chicago suburbs but who is willing to travel sometimes. I got a couple nibbles the last time I posted this and I’m still trying to pry their status out of HR.
FCM, maybe we could have this or separate Help Wanted and Job Wanted threads pinned to the top of MPSIMS so folks don’t need to keep bumping it.
I have a good job, but I don’t like where I live. I could perform my duties (with a lot fewer distractions) if I had a home office, and I could live where I liked; but the company isn’t progressive enough to allow that (except for some of the Sales people).
I have very good JCL skills, and write Easytrieve Plus (similar to COBOL) programs every day. I oversee two employees on the Data Operations team and answer questions for everyone. It seems that lately I’ve been busy with data quality improvement. For example, many lines of data have been dropped before loading into our database because the generic Easytrieve that reformats them did not handle the addresses correctly. I modified the program to fix that problem. Then I noticed that several lines were dropping as “duplicates” because the account numbers were being read improperly. I added a subroutine to keep from dropping. I also scanned the city/state/ZIP field to find the ZIP code (if present in the incoming data) and write it to its own field. Number signs ("#") cause business names to be truncated, so I scan the name fields to convert those to spaces which allows the full name to load. And I got rid of the ugly ASCII dots that don’t affect anything, but look bad. So I’ve made a better “generic” program that writes higher-quality data and allows more of it to be loaded. That’s in addition to writing contributor-specific Easytrieve reformat programs and Generic Reformat data profiles, and setting up the JCL so that they can be run.
I work well with all levels of the staff, and am able to explain things to our data contributors who very often are “non-technical”. Six months into the year I have yet to take any sick leave, and today is my first “personal day” (we get three per year, and I usually have to scramble to use the rest before the year runs out); so attendance is not a problem. I’ve been known to get up in the middle of the night and write a program, then e-mail it to myself so that I can run it when I get to work the next day.
In short, I’m technically competent and a dedicated employee. The only reason I’m “looking” is because I’d rather live elsewhere.
I’d like to relocate to Washington (state), either in the Bellingham area or in the Seattle area. Unfortunately, I come across “local applicants only” notes in many of the job postings.
If you’re looking for a job, I started another thread in May that mentions an opening in our department. You can also look at http://www.experian.com to see other postings for Southern California and other locations.
I’m looking for a job in the tokyo area for someone who speaks no japanese and has extensive retail ( esp. bookstore) experience, that pays more than 1200 yen an hour but doesnt involve teaching english or child care.
Hmm, cool thread. Thanks, FCM.

Hiring Notice
I’m always looking for new theatre techs (carps sometimes, electricians all the time.) Any theatre folks in the LA area should drop me an email. Please note: I do not have any full time positions. This is just for changeovers and possible running crew, based on what the show requires. Great idea, FCM.
If you’re an actor, I’m sure you’re a wonderful person, but I don’t deal with casting, so I can’t help you there. Sorry.
