Cajun Man and DrMatrix Need Our Help!

Well, Smith Barney actually had me on the payroll into 2002 (as part of my severance package), and I’ve updated my resume to reflect this.

Since then, I’ve spent all of my time looking for a position and just trying to stay afloat.

Sheesh…you had a TWO MONTH GAP…and they asked if you had been in PRISON?

That’s just…weird. Don’t you think?

Anyway, is there any reason a person shouldn’t put down their community service on a resume…especially since DrMatrix’s supervisors there think he is the best thing that came along since sliced bread? (Rightfully so, I’m sure!)

I’m just asking. I haven’t looked for a job for a zillion years, and I wouldn’t have a clue. Just to prove this to you…what’s a CV?

JustCallMeCluelessScotti

PS…The monetary total remains the same, but a kind member sent a phone card…THANK YOU!

CV = “Curriculum Vitae” = resume, as spoken by the more pompous among us. The term is widely used for executive positions and in academia. Just for fun, look at the job ads (sorry, “executive positions”) in the back of The Economist magazine.

Yes, guess who’s updating his resume and learning job-search skills* as well. Next up: searching for compatible companies.

[sub]*No, I’m not unemployed. But I want to jump under my own control, rather than be pushed unexpectedly. And I’d like to jump upwards.[/sub]

CV is what we call an everyday ordinary run of the mill resumé in the UK.

Personally, I think it’d be a top idea to put the community service in the resumé. I don’t know about recruitment in the US, so you may want to ask someone who does know. It seems to me like a good way to sell your skills.

Absolutely.

If it shows your skills or your work habits, put it on there. Doesn’t matter that you didn’t get paid for it.

The thing is, the community service does not show my skills. It’s just busy work at the court house. The kind of stuff that needs to get done, but the employees don’t want to do. I prepare documents for microfilming (mostly removing staples and paper clips), and some filing. The woman I report to knows that the work is boring. She like me because I care that the work is done properly, and I don’t complain.

I didn’t volunteer for the community service, I am required to perform two weeks of community service every month in exchange for the small amount of aid I receive.

Still, I would think that it doesn’t matter why you do community service, as long as you do it. Shows character, doesn’t it?

Bottom line, folks . . . unless DrM were volunteering as a computer consultant . . . anything else would be inappropriate on a technical resume such as his.

That’s not necessarily true. According to everyone that I read when I was laid off, it’s important to have done something while you’re laid off besides just looking for work. It shows that you’re more likely to be a dedicated worker. Having
Unemployed - mm/dd to mm/dd (during this time I did volunteer work for so and so) will tell HR that you’re not a slacker taking advantage of unemployment.

After mail call today, our total is $3620.00!

Thanks again, all who are helping. By contributing financially, by sending prayers and good thoughts and positive vibes…

and most especially to those who are sending job leads.

YOU ROCK! ALL OF YOU!

OK, so now you know about the courts administration systems, and you’ve made contacts so the line on your CV goes:

Currently doing charitable administration work at XYZ Court.

Spin it positively. You’re showing you’re methodical and tenacious. Who knows? An agency might have a requirement for somebody who knows the courts, and you’re all set. And your boss, being an insider, will give you a reference that will be given more weight than one from an outsider.

Have you looked inside the courts for a job? They can’t survive without computers. You may have the wrong technical skills but having those skills shows that you have the correct ability.

Zyada, I’d be leery of putting Unemployed on a CV, simply to avoid the computerised searches.

I disagree. You’re not in a position to be choosy, so cast your net wide.

Just dropped you a paypal, Scotticher…I’ve been waiting for payday. Hope it helps a bit.
Best,
karol

I just found this. Paypal doesn’t work for me. Can I send a certificate? Which one would be practical? Walmart? Amazon? [I have an account at Amazon]

To whom do I send it? Sorry for being slow.

You guys warm my heart.

Thank you, gum…please email me and we can talk about it, okay? Scotticher@aol.com

Our total today, with new PayPal and mail contributions, is $3790.00!!!

Not to make lightly of your situation---- but there ar many of us who have been effected by the wtc situation and the layoffs afterwards due to the economy… My SO has actually met you and speaks very highly of you.

As with many others, I have been laid off from my career (electrician) and was forced to take an alternative job. One as I may point out, only pays 50% of what I did make.

My solution was to work 2X as hard. Sure it is tough, but one must do what one must do to survive. I even went so far as to give up my current living conditions and downgrade to a cheaper form of housing.

I guess my point is that one must sacrifice, to the extreme sometimes to survive. Good luck in your ventures— You are not alone.

Oh and by the way----where are my charitable funds??? I’m a little short this month also.

I’m new to the boards and whatnot, but I sent a few bucks off in PayPal. Not much, but better than nothing.

Not much help, but the area I live in has a lot of manufacturing. We have Pfizer, Stryker, Pactiv, and bunches of others.

I don’t know what jobs there are on there, but I guess they might be worth looking at. Not computers, but something’s better than nothing.

Mailed, Scotticher and congratulations on the amount.

Great people here.

stormchaser, I’m glad that you have been able to find employment and to have the opportunity to work twice as hard. Fate has been charitable to both of us.
