"Cake Boss"

I just started watching this show, and am intrigued by the ingenuity of the cake designs, and the craftsmanship that goes into them. But I have to say, some of those cakes are severely lacking in esthetic appeal. I hope they taste better than they look.

I’ve noticed that a lot are essentially Rice Krispies treats covered with fondant which is something less than impressive.

But my personal favorite is how he always says “Next week, my wife/mother/co-worker/friend/family is having a birthday/anniversary/wedding/Christening/etc… and I’m gonna surprise them with a cake!

I think they’d actually be more surprised if you showed up with a new Blu-Ray player or something for them instead.

There’s an episode where a cake gets destroyed in a car accident and they rush back to the shop and recreate it in one hour. And I don’t mean, that in an hour they made something presentable for the client. In an hour they replicated the entire thing (and though a zillion people worked on it, it was not more than the zillion people who worked on the original too).

I wondered whether the client would be pissed to learn she got a “ultra custom, one of a kind” cake that actually only took an hour to make. It wasn’t even very attractive – although they did have a decent underlying concept, they actually overdecorated and made it busy.

I bet that they taste better than “Ace of Cakes” with their 87.3% inedible filler/support.
