Cake vs. Pie

Cake or pie? Assume your favorite type of each (no caveats, e.g. “Cake, unless the pie is…”); doesn’t necessarily have to be sweet. You can only have one and must choose; no “neither” here. The one you don’t choose will cease to exist.

What do you choose and why?

Many better cakes than pies.

Meh pie is better than meh cake, but great pie is inferior to great cake.

The opposite of this.

Cheesecake is being counted in the pie catagory, right? Because cheesecake, despite it’s name, is actually a pie.

If this is correct, then pie by a wide margin. If you decide to be totally nuts and count cheesecake as cake just because it has the work cake in it’s name…well then I just feel sorry for you.

(if you take cheesecake out of the running altogether then pie *still *wins, but by less.)

I prefer a nice, homemade blackberry, apple, or blueberry pie to any cake.
I guess cake just doesn’t do much for me.

As the old adage goes, “When come back, bring pie.”

It took thinking about “the best” in each category for me to decide

Pecan pie is better than German Chocolate cake.

I prefer my fruit raw so that rules out most pies. On the other hand I dislike buttercream frosting so that rules out many cakes. I may have to call this one a draw.

My mother never cared much for baking, so our birthday cakes were usually a boxed mix, until one year she started picking up the birthday girl/boy’s favorite type of pie from Baker’s Square. Birthdays in our house became much more delicious.

There’s a much wider variety possible with pie as opposed to cake.

Besides:
Fruit pie=good. Fruitcake…nuff said.

My favorite three desserts are pecan pie, cheesecake and anglefood cake so Pie wins 2-1. I don’t like sheet cakes and I think average pie is better then average cake simply because store bought pie can be pretty good.

I voted for cake before I read the OP. Had I read it first, I’d’ve been forced to go with pie. I think it’s unfair, though. I’m generally indifferent to pie, unless it’s pumpkin pie, which is the single best ever dessert in the world. Other than pumpkin pie, cakes win over pie almost every time. The only time I can think of pie winning (other than pumpkin pie, which always wins) is if it’s paired against a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. I hate chocolate cake with chocolate icing, so the pie would win that one.

I’m sorry. Cakes have icing. Cake wins.

I had 90% of pies. I like pumpkin pies Ok and a pecan pie is almost bearable but the rest of pies are gross. I did not know cheesecake was a pie and I am totally including it in cakes just to be obstinate. I mean, it says “cake”.

that’s like comparing apples and oranges.

You have my pity.:stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously thoguh, cheesecake has a crust and a filling, it doesn’t have a leavening agent and does not rise. So it has two of the critical components of being a pie and is missing the fundamentals of a cake.

I can see the case for neither, but it’s clearly more a pie than a cake.

Exactly! Apples are *clearly *better so why even have the poll.

I get more excited to see pie on the menu than cake.

I’ve got one problem with pie. No, no, two.

You try to cut a nice solid piece of pie and the filling just gooshes out. Or if there’s half a pie in the tin all the filling will have seeped out of the sides and you’ll have pie soup.

If it’s a more solid pie, like a coconut cream pie, it’s always served cold and I don’t really like cold pie.

Plus the filling of a pie is either pudding or jam-like, both things that can be better enjoyed without the crust.

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE PUMPKIN PIE, OR SUGAR CREAM PIE.

Cake is preferable. So many different shapes, sizes, favours, fillings, yum yum

pie or die
