OK, any excuse to eat out, I always say. (Well, actually, I don’t think I’ve ever said that before now, but I’m willing to start today to avoid being a complete liar.)
OK, any excuse to eat out.
There.
Just as well. I don’t think my tender ego could survive the experience of being the subject of a pit thread.
I don’t do dopefests but I’ll make you some recommendations…
James Joyce Irish pub on the 8th Avenue mall less than 5 minutes walk from your hotel, Buzzards cowboy cuisine restaurant with the world famous Bottlescrew Bill’s pub attached 5 minute from your hotel, the delights of Chinatown two blocks north of your hotel, the Eau Clair market with Joey Tomatoes, Brewsters Brew Pub, the Barley Mill, all fine joints, 10 minutes from your hotel.
I’m assuming you all want to sit around a table with the beverages of your choice and some good munchies. Calgary’s an oil town and business is good (what with all the US dollars pouring in to “ensure security of supply”) so there’s good restaurants and bars everywhere and you can’t really go wrong. Go to James Joyce and fight ignorance by buying a round of Guiness draft.
I’d heard rumours that there was one opening up somewhere in the city, but never had them confirmed.
Actually, if you’re visiting Calgary, it probably makes most sense to pick a place somewhere near where you are going to be staying, in an effort to make it more convenient for yourself. So where will you be?
Well, if we are just looking for drinks, then I have to echo Al’s suggestion of Bottlescrew Bills. Although I admit I’m a bit partial to the place, they do have an exciting selection of beverages. (And, for this kid, a much better pour of Guiness than James Joyce).
If, though, we are considering a meal, then how about Mother Tuckers? Still close by, and oh-so-Calgary-esqe.
Give me a time, give me a place, I might show up :D. Bottlescrew Bill’s sounds fine by me; someplace in Eau Claire is also good (there’s a Brewster’s Pub in Eau Claire now - I’ve never been there, but they tell me it’s nice).

Bad fellow Calgarians… bad, bad fellow Calgarians…
New Democrat party convention starts the 2nd and runs until Sunday afternoon… I think dopefest should be later on Sunday so that bagkitty can attend… (and bagkitty LOVES bottlescrew bill’s…)
Even if you guys don’t say “aboot” make sure to say it around DCnewsman. I assure the South Park hilarity will come. Although you can reverse it and make him say funny US phrases. hehehe.
I’m in town until Thursday morning and need to get dinner the other evenings too. If you’d like to grab a bite to eat Mon., Tues. or Wed., let me know.
What I really want to know…I picked up some tour books at the Canadian Embassy and they list a few restaurants in Calgary as “Canadian Cuisine.” Anyone know what that means exactly? Caribu?
Saturday night? Well, maybe I can turn up later for the drinking… is it still Bottlescrew Bill’s? And how does one go about identifying oneself to the Dopers?
Where did we come up with Bottlescrew Bill’s? I’m thinking Shilleleigh’s or Ceidlih’s or something like that… just, you know, because we might see men in kilts. Or something.
Ok, kids, here’s the deal: E-mail myself or dcnewsman with pertinent information. Like, your name, for starters, then SIN and your firstborn, and how you’d - oh, never mind. That’s the other list. I would like to finalize plans soon, being that I’ll be shelling out way too much money for a babysitter. My email address is in my profile, or here: gingerofthenorth@hotmail.com
