I will be in Calgary in early June for a conference. I will have several days free and no spare cash for car hire (just remodelled our house and doubled its size- now capital rich and current cash poor:o .)
What is there to do in Calgary that would fill three or four days (the least expensive air-fare gave me these days extra to the conference) which would not cost a fortune.
Either way, the transit system in Calgary is very good.
The zoo is great IMHO. It alone will be the best part of an entire day. The Glenbow museum is nifty, and the Imax Theatre at Ea Claire is nice too (the only thing there worth seeing).
You will then have very good access to all of Calgary. There is a transit station right at the University. I second the recommendation of the Glenbow Museum and the Calgary Zoo. I wish I were still out there so I could show you a good time. Perhaps a local doper will help out.
What’s going on at the U of C that you’ll be in town for, if you don’t mind me asking? (I kinda tend to be there a bit, what with being a student there, and all)
If you like outdoorsy, nature type stuff, check out Nose Hill (just a bit north of the University) There’s many km of hiking and stuff, in some of the last remaining natural (ok, mostly natural) prairie landscape left. From a distance, it looks like a big, featureless mound, but it’s full of ravines and aspen forests. In early June there should be a ton of new wildflowers. There’s also spectacular views of downtown from the top. It’s completely free, and a 15-20 min walk from the northwest part of the campus.
I know that I can think of loads more. Is there anything in particular that you’d like to see or do here? Any particular interests?
And maybe I just notice these threads more 'cause I live here, but does it seem like there’s a lot of “what do I do in Calgary?” threads? I had no idea we were so popular with visiting people!
It is a conference on “Social Role Valorization” - an analysis of the poor treatment of people devalued by society- learning disabled, mentally ill, etc… It runs from 4-7 June.
I’ll pack some walking boots and try what you suggest.
