California Propositions 2024

I voted this weekend by filling out the mailed ballot and then dropped into a vote box. L.A. county has many, many locations.

My issue votes…
2, yes: pretty much always vote for school funding.
3, yes: constitutional guarantee of right to marry.
4, yes: more action to reduce impact of climate change.
5, yes: requiring two-thirds majority to pass taxes is anti-democratic.
6, yes: slavery is wrong, period.
32, yes: mostly indifferent to this, but better wages at the bottom improves the economy.
33, no. mostly indifferent, but we need regulations to increase home-building, not discourage it.
34, no. the Republican party trying to increase government regulation? not buying it.
35, no. mostly indifferent. both parties are for it. why don’t they have the legislature deal with it directly.
36, no. stupid Republican fear mongering. our prison system is already too big and they want to waste more money on it?

For L.A. voters only: I voted YES on Measure G. This will reorganize county government. Increase the Board to 9 Supervisors, creates an elected County Executive, and also adds an ethics commission which will have the power to investigate county government.

Current results:

It appears that crime is once again illegal. As of right now (10:30 pst):

Too bad about 6, but the rest I’m ok with. Glad to see 33 is facing a fiery death. Rent control is dumb.

Prop results look not bad at all. Good news after the bad national news.

I’m not in love with the endless bond measures, but these were hardly the worst, so I won’t complain. And while I’m not confident that 36 by itself will drastically reduce crime, I hope it sends a message to the leadership. And, well, I’m fiscally conservative so I’m opposed to minimum wage and rent control on principle, so I’m happy to see those lose (though the margins on minimum wage are slim, so I guess it could still flip). 3 winning is not a surprise but welcome nevertheless.

I’m very disappointed in the failure to pass #5 and #6.

#6: Eliminates Forcing Inmates to Work. I’m just gobsmacked that people are still in favor of slavery. Besides the obvious that enslaving people, even criminals, is wrong on the face of it, it’s economically stupid for workers to allow slaves to compete for jobs.

#5: Bonds for Affordable Housing and Infrastructure. This one hurts personally. My local school district puts up a bond issue every time it can, and consistently gets 60-65% approval. The clear majority isn’t enough to pass it, and still won’t be because this issue failed.

In case anyone is interested in L.A. county results.

Over a third of Californians voted against the rights of same sex marriage.

What on Earth are you talking about? CA inmates get paid if they work?

I’m gobsmacked that people tried to make that issue about slavery. It’s very obviously different from keeping another human being as private property.

Involuntary servitude is slavery. If they get paid (and sometimes they’re not), it’s far below free wages. Not all slavery is chattel slavery.

With you on that. Forced labor is forced labor regardless of the token payment.

One of the very few bright moments of the evening (and it was extra tough because I thought I’d watch hockey to relax, and then my team just put in a totally shitty performance) was that the city council candidate that wants to reopen our main street to cars to satisfy the Nextdoor crowd appears to have lost to her opponent.

What the fuck is up with those brain damaged assholes who are against the promenade? This is a sliver of good news on a horrible day.

Then is a conscript who is drafted into the army a slave?

No, but if you define slavery widely enough that it includes the draft and prisoners who get paid for their labor, what makes it inherently immoral?

Slavery, defined as when one person owns another person as property, is bad.

Slavery, defined as whenever a person is compelled to do work - for example, if I quit my job, I’d eventually run out of money and starve, therefore I am compelled to work - is hardly immoral.

It’s the same shit that’s wrong with a substantial part of the electorate in general - if only we could change some things to be like they were some magical time in the misty past, everything else they dislike about modern society would automatically fall in line. Any of the thorny structural problems like the impact of online shopping on small retail and the broader homelessness issue will all be solved if only they could once again drive down the street.

Slavery and involuntary servitude are lumped together in the 13th Amendment, so it’s not a new interpretation. And it’s not a new thing to try to close loophole there, even if only at the state level.

So is the Draft slavery?

I thought a local school bond measure only needed 55% to pass in California.

That’s a lot lower than the 55% that voted against it the last time it was on the ballot.

Also note that some of them may have voted against it because, technically, it makes all marriage “a fundamental right,” including marriage between close relatives.

It always has been, This will just jam the already overcrowded CA prisons even more, until some judge orders something done.

IMHO, if something is a great idea- then put it in as part of the regular budget, dont borrow for it. Mild rent control works. San Jose has mild rent control and it works very well- it only applies to older building, with iirc 4+ units and limits the increase to 8% a year.

I concur.

It wont do shit to reduce crime.

Its not slavery, and in CA at least prisoners get fairly decent meals- why should they do some work for those meals? And they get paid anyway.

Right.

In CA they get paid, and they get free room and board- shouldn’t they work for their meals?

Yes, in some states, they dont get paid, and they often do useless work, and their meals would choke a rat. By CA isnt like that.

Mind you, I just plain didnt vote on that. I saw both sides. But the “its slavery!” argument lost me.

I’m glad 4 passed, especially since my insurance company just discontinued wildfire coverage in my zip code. The El Dorado and Line fires made them a bit skittish. Fuck you, AAA! I live in the middle of a city. But canceling a whole zip code is easier.

Insurance companies hate paying out. Many are leaving Florida also.

I had to go CA Fair Plan.
