Call the Midwife; 2017 Christmas Special (open spoilers)

Heads up; the 2017 Christmas Special is airing on PBS tonight (and has already aired in the UK). Goodbye 1962; hello 1963.

Even slushier than usual (mind you, it was indeed a foul winter).

The baby waking up in Valerie’s handback was both moving and terrifying; I get why she was so freaked out. I was worried the baby would end up dying before they got back to his parents. Sister Julienne and Shelagh quickly decoding that woman & her daughter’s medical records to figure out what really happened was pretty good too. I can’t wait for the new series proper to start. Beatlemania hit the UK in '63, and Barbara’s going to need a temporary replacement. Maybe we’ll finally get to see a non-white midwife (say from India or the Caribbean) at Nonnatus House.

I was surprised that there were no eyebrows raised at Trixie planning to go off for a European ski vacation with her dentist. I thought nurses had morals clauses in their contracts back then. But even the nuns didn’t seems surprised or upset.

It would have been assumed they would have separate rooms - or they might have been going in a group. And in any case, as professionals they’d be understood to be responsible adults. These weren’t must-be-chaperoned Victorian times.

And most importantly nobody has it in for Trixie so all she has to do is show a bit of discretion and she’s safe.
