Calling all RN Dopers!

Yes, as in Registered Nurse Dopers.

I’ve hit a point in my life where I am considering a career change. I’ve been doing HR work for a long time now, and it is no longer fulfilling to me.

I think I’ve wanted to be a nurse for at LEAST 10 years now (I’m 30 for what it’s worth). For whatever reason, I never went to school for it, opting for the “easy” way out of an English degree. I think it was a maturity issue…I never really felt “able” to handle a Nursing program. But I think I am ready now, if I can find a program that will accept me.

So my question is…what is it that makes you WANT to be an RN? What are the things that keep you going on your long, long shifts? Did you specialize? How hard was it to get through a program? I consider myself fairly intelligent, but would like to have at least a GRASP of what I could possibly be getting myself into here…I haven’t made any commitments to a school yet, I am in the very PRELIMINARY stages of planning…but any help, support, or “RUN! TURN BACK!! ARE YOU CRAZY?!” would be appreciated. If it matters at all, I live in NY.

Thanks all!!
