Calvin and Hobbes: Snowmen

While I was out shoveling this morning, I noticed that the snow is the best packing/snowmen-making snow I’ve seen in years. I’m very tempted to make a slew of bizarre snowmen doing something weird in my front yard, a la Calvin. Anyone have any particular memories of Calvin scenes that they enjoyed? My neighborhood has a strong Halloween connection (it’s called Irvington, after Washington Irving) - if I had any costume gear I’d set up some really late trick or treaters.

My personal favorite would require a bit of work, since it involved several snowmen with some very specially shaped branches as arms.

Calvin set up a “dead” snowman in front of the family car, making it look as though the car had hit him – the snowman base is on the car hood, and the other pieces are laying in front of the car. Surrounding the dead snowman were a few others, looking shocked and horrified, some with their arms held to their heads.

Calvin’s dad and mom see this tableu after it’s completed, and the dad says “We’ve got to get that kid to a therapist.”

One of my favorites! I also really like the half-melted snowmen prophets of doom, carrying signs: “Repent sinners!” “Spring is coming!”.

Hmmm… let’s see. You could

make some snowmen making a picket line, complete with signs
have a few looking in your (or a neighbor’s) window
recreate the three headed troll from Monty Python’s holy grrrrrrail
do the nativity scene
make a bunch of tiny ones worshiping a giant one as their god
make Easter Island heads
make them having a snowball fight, complete with protective forts
More ideas here.

I miss the snow sometimes. :frowning:

I’m partial to “Eggplant casserole tonight?” as signaled by the gagging snowmen in the front yard. The snowmen remains to me one of the funniest repeating gags I’ve ever seen in comic strips.

I think they’re called Snowgoons

Make a guillotine. Snow heads will roll.

Diverging from the C&H theme, you could make a snowman with Dwight Schrute emerging from it, snowball in hand.

I like the car one but my favorite may be the one with a dead snowman face down with scoops out of his back and another snowman holding an ice cone and ice cream scoop.

I probably need a therapist, too.

Unless Rainn Wilson is availble for the part, wouldn’t this pretty much be a snow man coming out of a snow man?

I really miss Calvin & Hobbes. I real miss The Far Side. I really miss Tank McNamara. The world is a poorer place.

Brilliant.

I love the car one - but I don’t have a driveway. I have a detached garage in the back connected to the alley. The snow fort would be fun, but it would just be me out there building a couple snow forts. Plus, my yard is pretty narrow in the front.

The Snowmen House of Horror has some great ideas, but I lack in props. My tree is about 4 diameter, so that’s out. I don’t have a sled. The decapitated head is good - but physically impossible (without steel arms anchored to the ground). I do like the melting man…

Ooh…Monster!

Any ideas how to make the faces? The open mouths really set them apart, but I wonder how to make them visible.

Fill spray bottle with water and food color; spray the inside of the mouth. Red would be nice.

Several years ago, I made some C&H-style snowmen, and took pictures, of course. I’ll have to try and find them on my home computer tonight. If I do, I’ll upload them to Photobucket and link to them here.

Tank McNamara is still running. You can catch up at GoComics.com

The search at comics.com isn’t working for me but Peanuts had some snowmen strips starring Linus. For example: several tiny snowmen and a Linus at a big snow podium.

I was going to post about the snow monster devouring the snow villagers, but #14’s link scooped that (heh)-but I don’t know how they propped the one snow person up on that tentacle.

The one with the blood-spurting eyeballs is actually from Don Hertzfeldt’s REJECTED (video link) which is definitely borderline NSFW, but hilarious if you like graphic violence towards stick figures. That particular scene starts at 2:39 min.
