Calvin and Hobbes

Me too? Pretty please?

I named my dog Hobbes.

I loved the snowmen!

And I am raising Calvin.
I’ve said this on the boards over and over again, do not let pregnant women read all the Calvin and Hobbes in one sitting.
Oh, the things that child has come up with.
Can’t go to bed cause Zombies don’t need sleep. Dinner time is a laugh a minute.
Got Calvin right here. Down to the spikey blonde hair and the stuffed Tigger.
And we have gotten to be like Calvins parents. It’s a defence mechanism.

Gotcha Rico and Silentgoldfish.

My favorite punch line “Wow, where does the bread go?”

LMAO thanks Fern!

I can see why that was never included in the books!

Well I happen to posses a cute little powerpoint slide with bout 10 really good strips. If anyone is interested I would be glad to share `em.The size is about 500k but its weel worth it.Just mail me if you want it.

Definitely loved Calvin and Hobbes. Loved the way they were named for philiosphers!

There’s a great quote from Calvin and Hobbes that goes something like:

“The surest sign that there is intelligent life out there [in outer space] is that none of it has visited us.”

Oh, yeah, I think Calvin and Hobbes was the best comic strip ever. Great humor, great characters, wit and insight, brilliant illustrations–the drawings were always funny, and the artwork in the later strips was superb–just all-around wonderful.

What’s this about a strip that was never reprinted in one of the books, anyway? Somebody send it to me!

Well, Fern Forest, it seems that legendary strip of yours is seeing some action. If you can find the time, could you send it to me too? Pretty please?

I, too, absolutely love C&H. It’s true: there’s nothing like it, and I’m guessing there never will be. Does anyone know what Watterson is doing right now? Is it true that he’s simply doing ‘nothing’ artistically anymore? It would be a shame, and I’d like to see what he’d do now, even if it isn’t Calvin and Hobbes.

OK, Rather then send it to every fan I went and found the link.

Scroll, click and enjoy.

Thanks for the link, Fern Forest. What’s really strange though, is that the middle picture (where Calvin takes off his shoe) is printed in a “how to draw cartoons” book I have, with Dutch translation, no less. Intense.

One of the things I love about this comic is that every line is necessary. For instance, Calvin’s eyes are normally oval dots, but change shape to express various moods. At first, Hobbes did not have a line down his back, but later Watterson began adding a line. This simple line made Hobbes seem more three-dimensional. Sometimes the characters interact with each other without a background being shown.

I read the old strips at ucomics daily. I am old enough that I read them when they first came out, and I think that they are still as fresh and funny today.

I’m sad that there’s not a new daily strip out these days, but on the other hand, I’m glad that Watterson had the sense to know when he was burning out, and and the guts to quit while we still loved the strip.

Might as well beg like the rest of 'em.

Calvin and Hobbes was a classic of western literature, no matter the fact that the literature had pictures. I’ve got the books, all of them, and won’t let anybody touch them.

They’re MINE dammit.

Here’s a chance card for welby

Go back three posts

I can’t…

And what’s more, I swear it looks familiar. Where might I have seen it? (That link does say the strip appeared in some papers, though.)

I’m guess cause it’s Calvin basically saying that he wants to ride in a washing machine, which is a big no-no for the kiddies. It’s pretty tame, but judging by the editor’s reactions to some Far Side cartoons I can see why it was axed.

It’s very similiar to a few printed strips where Hobbes is riding in the wash, it certainly seemed like a strip I’ve already read till I figured that out.

That kind of makes sense, but if they were so concerned about child safety issues with Calvin and Hobbes…I mean, let’s face it, Calvin wasn’t exactly lacking in derring-do. There were zillions of other strips that showed him acting irresponsibly and doing things that perhaps some parents didn’t want their own kids to do.

Then again, it was an early strip. I guess I was just expecting a lot worse.

It was linked to in an earlier thread. That was maybe a year ago. So you probably saw it that way.

It says it was replaced in the books. It’s replacement would be the one where Calvin claims he has a flame thrower to scare the monsters under his bed. “They lie. I lie.”

I don’t get it.

Ok, here’s the real question: Is Hobbes real?

I contend that Spaceman Spiff’s adventures, the T-Rexes, etc., are all products of Calvin’s exceedingly rich imagination, but that Hobbes does in fact become a real tiger when no one else is around.

Anyone who believes that Hobbes is just a stuffed animal and only comes to life in Calvin’s mind is just plain sick.
