Can an individual be forced to release their tax returns in a Deposition?
According to this article, there is a away for congress to access tax returns. The process of deposing the subject of the inquiry is not part of that though.
And on double checking my link I see it leads to the search results, not the article I intended. Happily it’s the first article, the one from NPR. Links are labor intensive and chancy for me, so I’m going to leave it as is.
Anecdotally, when we were going to depose my wife, one of the questions we were going to ask specifically was what her actual income for the year was on her tax returns since the number she used in her settlement proposal was not believable. Not asking to see the actual papers by any means, but if she had stuck to the number in her deposition and on discovery was found to be false, she would have perjured herself. Not A Good Thing in a custody hearing.
