Can an obese person be "mysterious"?

Was she in Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” video?

Why WOULDN’T an overweight person be “mysterious?” What an odd personal quality to even ponder, and even odder to assign it to certain body types but not others. Do you go around looking at people saying to yourself, “Him … mysterious. Her … no. Him … no. Her … yes.”

I think this is one of the strangest BBS questions I’ve ever run across. I guess it’s just further evidence that a lot of people don’t see someone overweight as a real person, just a … thing to look down on and project onto.

Heh. No, she wasn’t. But you know, she did actually used to do ironing while she worked!

She actually has been in a couple of independent films done in Baltimore. I’ll have to ask her which ones as I don’t know offhand. I’m not really into the local film and art scene but I do have some weird artsy friends!

Who were, of course, father & son. My post is my cite.

My brother married an opera singer a couple of years ago. While I had met her before of course, I had not met her bridesmaids, who were all also opera singers.

They were also all “large” to “very large”, shall we say.

We all then spent the better part of a week on a cruise. I had the feeling the singers, who all met in opera school, had specific training in mysteriousness, certainly acting is part of the craft. In many ways this is no different from the skinny women I know as film actors.

One of the bridesmaids had her brother along as her escort. I spent time talking with him, he was fairly large and mysterious himself. But honest and forthcoming enough about their background that it made his sister seem that much more mysterious to me. she carries her mysteriousness well, and at will, and it is serving her well as she appears to be making a nice living traveling the world to meet the demand for her performance.

I might add tangentially, that the cruise karaoke contest and talent show were both unlike any the crew had ever seen before, not all of them knew the circumstances of the wedding on board that trip

Heh! That was my scene in Baltimore…

Of course, there are the all time queens of mysterious large women there (sadly nether still with us) Edie and Divine.

Can a “Bawlamer Hon” be mysterious though? In some weird way, I’d say yes she can!

ETA: and let’s not forget Jean Hill while we talk about John Waters “starlets” - I quite literally bumped into her hard at a party once and her reaction was as mysterious and staged as Marlene Dietrich might have been in the same circumstance. I remember it distinctly for that very reason.

Yes, but he/she must wear dark glassess, a broad-brimmed hat, and a cloak.

I don’t see how this shows that at all. There are probably qualities that obese people have that some people wouldn’t attribute to skinny people. This means nothing.

How about the Buddha-like inscrutable oriental patriarch who turns out to be the elusive crime lord the movie detectives heard about while investigating the big case? Not a real life example of course, but it’s the first thing I thought of.

This isn’t GD.

My favorite ex-boyfriend used to say I was mysterious…My bff says that I’m just secretive. I like mysterious better.

Sydney Greenstreet has always been a mysterious sort, but I get your meaning.

I think he may be thinking of the “mysterious stranger” archetype you see in cartoons, comics, and action movies. It’s still kind of a stereotypey question, but as far as popular portrayal goes they’re usually skinny.

But really, to be mysterious all you need is a black fedora, a cloak, a hook for a hand, and a beard (preferably graying).

WTF are ‘glamour shots’?

Google is your friend.

If a very large man dressed entirely in black showed up for Christmas Eve Mass accompanied only by a large black dog, I would find him mysterious and fascinating.

Size and shape don’t have a lot to do with mystery for me.

Another one:
Joliet Jake Blues as played by John Belushi.
Carrie Fisher HAD to see something in him…

Not a helpful answer.
Here’s a wiki link:

…*is the photographing of a model with the emphasis on the allure of the subject. Photographers use a combination of cosmetics, lighting and airbrushing techniques to produce the most physically appealing image of the model possible."

You know, now that I think about it, what about Hagrid in Harry Potter? When he first showed up in the movie they did an EXCELLENT job at making it quite mysterious, as well as somewhat ominous.

In that case, YOUR post is my cite.
