Can anyone explain a couple of Dope memes to me?

I’ve just re-read that 1920’s style “death rays” thread, and was just reminded of what I think is the wittiest thing I’ve ever seen written on the SMDB:

I guess I don’t think those are significant enough memes to be included in the list of Beginner’s Guide to Glossary of Terms on the SDMB … However, I’d be glad to add them if y’all want.

Someone want to take a crack at a reasonable definition?

I just assumed it was because they really have no meaning. They’re just funny things we say.

Dex: Perhaps an “Intermediate-level Guide to Overused and Former SDMB Memes” thread?

There’s even an associated Wikipedia article although the term no longer appears in the article.

If we had stickies to explain all the nonsense posted here, we would would have no room left.

Do you really want a sticky explaining the “tug-ahoy”?

Well, I could have sworn I saw something that explained the Opal thing, at least. The rest, I stumbled upon eventually.

Also, I stumbled on Gaudere’s law before I got here, albeit possibly on Snopes, Fark, or Wikipedia, all of which may have a fairly large Doper presence. Muphry’s law is a stupid name.

That’s the thread I was thinking of! Shouldn’t that be a sticky?

Going from memory…
Someone wrote a list of things that included two items. OpalC objected that two things did not constitute a list. So anyone after that with only two point included as their third, “Hi Opal”.

Now, does “pobe” make the list?

If you open the box.

It is. There are so many stickies that there were complaints about that, and xash consolidated them.

That was me. Yeah, other people agreed, but I started the ATMB thread. (unless there was another one I didn’t know about.)

And I know the Opal meme. I just could have sworn I read it in some kind of FAQ. But now I’m not so sure. I think there just happened to be a thread about how some people thought it was getting old.

Did *I burning your dog *predate the thread?
