Can anyone help me with this (computer related)?

I’ll try to make this really brief because I just typed out the entire story, but forgot to log in and, thus, lost my post. I installed some updates last night among which was a display update. I had my screen area set to 12801024 pixels pre-installation and my area was set to 16001200 pixels post installation and reboot. I tried to adjust the area of the screen but to no avail. All I get is something to this effect (I had to doctor the second photo, but I’m sure you get the idea). Basically, what I’m seeing is the area set to 1600*1200 pixels inside a little rectangle that doesn’t even take up the entire screen. The black void surrounding my display cannot be reached with my poor little mouse. So, what say you all? Thanks in advance for any advice and such.

You’ve tried adjusting your display properites in ‘Display Properties -> Settings’ to 1280*1024? The one with the slider.

Yup. That’s the first thing I did.

Have you tried adjusting your monitor’s settings, not those of the computer?

Horizontal and vertical width occasionally go haywire for me when I change your video card’s resolution.

Secondly, is that Angelina Jolie? Please can you email me your wallpaper?

From what I see from your picture, I assume that you are using a LCD with a native resolution of 1280*1024. Your picture indicates that you are running at a lower resolution (800x600) and the LCD has shrunken the image to accomodate.

Check to insure that you are not running in dual monitor mode or that you have the correct video drivers installed. If all else fails, try uninstalling the video drivers and reinstalling. I’ll assume you’ve already downloaded the latest ones.

jjimm: I’m running off of a laptop and so I don’t believe monitor settings would apply (unless I’m a complete idiot and/or blind and I’ve missed them). As for my love, it’s Hilary Duff (of the Lizzie McGuire fame) and I’d be glad to send it over given an email address (if you’re serious that is).

peterW: I’m not running in dual mode and I’m sure that I have the correct drivers installed because my display was looking grand before I installed the updates last night. As for uninstalling and reinstalling my video drivers, I’d need a bit more explanation as to how to take those steps.

I found exactly what I installed last night. Apparently, I got an update for my display driver (NVIDIA Display Driver Version 4.2.5.8). I don’t know what this means though. :smack:

your nvidia control panel should have options for resizing the screen.
Also the problem could be that since installing new drivers your display was not correctly set. At the very least it is clear that your refresh rate has changed (this is why the whole works moved sideways.
Try redetecting your monitor (in display options) and reset the refresh rate (try 72hz).

I agree with Quint Essence – I would try to resize the image displayed on your screen using the nvidia control panel. However, assuming your nvidia drivers aren’t drastically different from mine, finding the nvidia panel to adjust your monitor settings is not obvious. Here’s how I did it on my computer:

Under Display Properties->Settings, click the Advanced button. On my computer, this brings up several tabs (General, Adapter, Monitor, etc.) Click on the one that has the name of your video card (mine it’s GeForce4 Ti4200), which opens up a little side menu panel. Under nView Display Mode, click Device Settings->Screen Adjustment, which opens up controls to resize the display.

Good luck!

I’m of the opinion that it’s the monitor driver. Though technically the laptop doesn’t have a “monitor”, it is a display device. I’d check your monitor driver under Display>Settings>Advanced>Monitor tab and see what driver is being used. Try Plug & Play Monitor, or any of the Laptop monitor types listed in “Display a list of all drivers” option when changing the monitor driver.

[hijack]You know HD is only 16, right?[/hijack]

Are you running XP? If so and the NVidia applet won’t work there is a tab in the driver section for each device that allows you to roll back to the previous version which you indicated was working well. It might also be in Win 2000 Pro but I am not sure. There is also the choice of System Restore if you still are unsatisfied and you have that option enabled.

Nice picture for the screen and it’s hard to believe she is 16.
