I would be very happy to find out the artist and name of the piece.
My first thought was Gustave Doré, but a cursory search doesn’t turn up anything like it in relation to his work, and the wings are rather different from his angels, I think. It really hits the Victorian-morbid motifs, doesn’t it?
Go to Google images and click on the little camera in the search box. upload the image and see if it comes up anywhere. I tried to do it for you but the link is protected.
It’s “To the Unknown Land” by Edmund Blair Leighton. Linky goodness.
Shark Sandwich, you are awesome! My sister will be eternally grateful. How did you find it???
I did not know about this! I uploaded the image from my desktop and it identified it immediately. Thanks for fighting my ignorance, TruCelt!
An ex-girlfriend in college was in to medieval art and had some prints and a coffee table book of Leighton’s work. That piece was in the book, and it’s always stuck with me. I remembered the artist but not the title of the piece, but a little Googling fixed that in short order.
Glad I could help!
Good points…I first thought of G.D., and it does indeed have that Victorian vibe.
