Can anyone verify that Dustbag Baker said this:

“My son wanted to go out there [to shag balls] but I told him he was too young.”

During the homerun derby last night?

Thanks in advance, and I hope this is the right forum for this.

Moving thread from IMHO to General Questions.

According to the Fire Joe Morgan blog (one of my favorite baseball-related web sites), he said exactly that.

A little background, here. Dusty’s little boy was used as a bat boy in games a while back. It was cute, watching the tyke running out to drag back the dropped lumber. However, the kid ran out once or twice while the ball was still in play, putting himself in danger. After some outcry, Baker went to older bat boys.

In that light, the story looks a little different.

Dustbag? Not too fond of the guy, eh?`

Happened just once, as I recall – in the 2002 World Series. JT Snow of the Giants crossed the plate, then scooped up Darren Baker & carried him back to the dugout. Made quite a dramatic scene, which you can probably find with a quick google.

Good thing it was JT Snow crossing the plate, he was slow enough to react properly.

Here’s a picture of Snow grabbing Baker’s son after crossing the plate.

He grabbed him because there was another runner coming behind Snow, and with a potential play at the plate, the kid Baker was in danger of getting hurt AND managing to bollux up a World Series.

I think it’s funny Dusty said that at the Home Run Derby. Shows he has a sense of humor about the issue, which did have some impact upon his move from San Francisco to Chicago the next year, and which, perhaps unfairly, tarnished his reputation a little.

Good grief, what part of his face is he carrying him by?

Yeah, it does look like he’s got him by the nostril or something, but he actually has him by the front of his shirt.
