Here is a simple way to track down a “complete twit” who spams the board.

First of all, while the “complete twit” does not list an e-mail address, he does list a website.

Saunter over to a website to search for domain registrants and plug it in. You will, if it is one from another country, find something like this:
Domain Name: BLUECABBAGE.CO.UK
Registered For: Steven Croxon
Domain Registered By: FREENETNAME
Registered on 10-Sep-1999.

Of course, if it was an American site, we would have all of this persons contact information right there. But then you notice the name, which is not common.

So you stick the name into Google and you see that he has been posting to message boards a bit. Even though his post is no longer there, the post is cached (thank you, Google!), which means you can see the following:
Who To Contact
Steven Croxon
Dovetail CDs
28 Longacres Drive, Whitworth, Rochdale
Country: England
Telephone: 07790891962
Mobile Phone:
Fax:
E-Mail: bluecabbage@btinternet.com
URL: http://www.bluecabbage.co.uk

And just like that, we have the e-mail address and even the phone number of an actual SPAMMER to this board!

Why, the mind boggles at what some enterprising folks could do with this information if they wished…

Yer pal,
Satan - Commissioner, The Teeming Minions

TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Six months, 21 hours, 38 minutes and 18 seconds.
7356 cigarettes not smoked, saving $919.51.
Extra time with Drain Bead: 3 weeks, 4 days, 13 hours, 0 minutes.

Look, Satan & I agree!!!

But don’t do anything illegal, now- “it would be wrong”.

Satan you are one class guy. The drinks are on me if by any miracle we ever meet.

I’m sure everybody here is too mature and sensible to do anything with that info. but it’s nice to have it anyway.

The best thing to do is simply send him an email, alerting him that his information is public domain, and that he might want to have it removed as there are unstable internet residents out there, especially on the Straight Dope message board.

I’ve found that strategy works the best. One time, I was involved in a credit dispute with a collection agency. We simply pulled all available information on the agent, as well as his relevant credit history, and sent it to his manager. We then asked him to stop harassing us. Never threatened him, simply made it apparent that we were a little bit smarter and more ruthless. That and we broke his fax machine.

I still get giggles over that.

Apropos of nothing, a site like http://www.justatip.com is the perfect way to get any random email address out into public view where, oh, I don’t know, spammers might see it. Of course, I’m not saying anything about this site specifically - it just seems like it might do the trick. What were we talking about again?
