I posted this a few weeks ago in another forum, but my husband told me to try posting it here to get some responses. I am interested in learning to play golf, but I have a major obstacle: I am a very busty female. When my husband (MorgRandall) showed me the correct way to swing, I discovered it was impossible. If I keep my left arm straight as he told me to, about the only thing I can do is putt. We went to the driving range this morning, and swinging to drive was completely out.
Have any of the similarly endowed Straight Doper ladies out there overcome this difficulty? If so, any pointers for me? I have thought about wearing a sports bra (not a bad idea and more comfortable), and I considered duct tape (he got excited). I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks!
No specific advice, but just about any relatively healthy female regardless of buxomity (?) can play good golf, with practice practice practice you will devine the best method for your build.
All the golfing I’ve done has been without any skill, whatsoever, so my personal experience isn’t much help.
However, one of my girlfriends is rather stacked, as well as being an excellent golfer. I believe that she a) wears a super-duper, pack 'em in, smoosh 'em down sort of bra and b) has developed her swing around them.
An aweful lot of very good lady golfers are bigger girls (better for driving, I’ve heard), with bigger boobs, so it can be done.
I’ll toss in a ‘me too’ here. My instructor was of the attitude that simply possessing breasts, of any size, made learning to golf properly very difficult. He sneered at me and said I was going to have to work really hard to play at all. I ended the class ranked comfortably in the top quarter. I just pictured his nasty little face printed on the ball when I’d go to swing. It was the best incentive to hit it well and make that troll-faced ball go far away.
A good minimizer bra will help. Not all of them minimize in the same way, I found. You probably want one that’ll not squoosh your chest really far out to the sides and get in the way of your arms.
Just wanted to say “Great story”. People make modifications all the time to physical “limitations” and do what works for them. Natural skill and hard work will allow you to adjust whatever you need to for your own body. Technique is important, but the end result can be acheived by more than one means.
I’m a golfer so I think I can help you, but I’m not a lady, so I’m not 100% sure.
I’d say that if your boobs are getting in the way, your upper body is not rotating enough. At the top of your backswing, your shoulders should be rotated near 90 degrees, or even more if you really wind up like me. You should be looking directly over you left shoulder (if you’re right-handed) at the ball when you’re all wound up. For me in this position, I can see that if I had boobs, my right arm would be nowhere near them because it’s away from my body, and my left arm is raised well above the boobal plane. So maybe the problem is you’re moving just your arms and not your torso, or that your left arm is not high enough for a proper swing.
I think this is right because I’ve heard from golf professionals that you can play golf no matter how many boobs you have or what size they are.
We really need to find a buxom lady golfer as it isn’t as easy for her as everyone seems to think and I’m not able to help her accomplish a backswing that isn’t awkward. It’s not a problem being in the full backswing position but getting there requires some gyrations with her left arm. For now she’s just chipping without much of an arm swing and doing well but I don’t want the full swing to be so difficult for her.
As a long time golf pro/instructor at one of the Seattle-area courses, I’m going to need a little more information. Perhaps a few photographs of your upper torso?
