Can 'extra good' posters be given special privlages?

I noticed that I can’t post 2 messages within a certain time frame, edit my posts, or do a couple of other things I can do in other message boards.

Can’t you loosen the rules for people that are ‘extra good’? I know on Gamefaqs.com they have this system called ‘karma’ which seems to work well when it comes to people online (and that board caters to a much younger crowd than this one). I’m not trying to ask to be the ‘exception to the rule’, I just think that posters who have built up a very good reputation should be rewarded for it.

One question:

Where do you draw the line? With the popularity of these boards across the electronic ether called the Internet, there’d be no way in Hades you could even remotely consider keeping such a system in operation.

People would whine. IANAMod, but I’m sure the mods are shootin’ for a “whine free” board.

Besides, there’s lots of things we can’t do, which don’t detract from the content of the boards, but sure as hell help speed ‘em up in loadin’.

You have a point, though maybe the SDMB could have a ‘pay’ version that you could subscribe to. Like fark does. So if you want the extra bells and whistles, you can contribute to the great Cecil, or maybe donate money coughbribe to Admins/moderators ;). I don’t think goobers and trolls are going to be willing to fork over money just to further their own trolly agendas…

People who have built up a good reputation on the SDMB are rewarded. They are rewarded with respect for themselves and their statements by their fellow Dopers.

One of the nice things about the SDMB is that it stands on its own. It has a concise mission – to fight ignorance – and as such, content is key. It’s all about the words, not about bells and whistles, member perks, competition with other forums or any other such malarkey. We set our own agenda, we don’t need to cull ideas other from forums, all with vastly differing raison de etre than ours, in order to survive or to serve the needs of Dopers well.

“Extra good” posters are willing and able to contribute to the board without needing to be rewarded with perks.

Oh Good Og, don’t open up this can of worms. . . [sub]sore subject 'round here[/sub].

Besides, the point was already raised: If you want to ‘donate money’ to the great Master himself, buy his stuff.

Even if you had a pay/non-pay situation, you’d be creating two distinct “classes” of posters, and that would completely detract from the whole idea of this board.

I’ll put up with the riff-raff, so long as I can hear some good ideas once in awhile.

I’ll second TeaElle and Smeghead. TeaElle also basically answers the OP’s other question about avatars and banners.

Of course, if you’re really, really good, they make you a moderator.

Or is that if you’re really really bad?

He’s probably trying to block that period of his life from his memory . . .

If you’re really, really, really good, they let you stop being a moderator.
