There are pluses and minuses, obviously, and we are talking about it. We wouldn’t, however, have to go and look at everyone’s picture all the time. When somebody misbehaves, the teeming millions are generally pretty quick about letting us know.
Can you please bring this up to the other admins and mods? I don’t really care but if it makes the users happier and doesn’t cost too much time and overhead it seems like a good thing to add.
I quite like this idea. It can’t be that hard to keep it clean. There are lots of sites where the uploaded photo is not actually posted until it is approved. Or, have a link to click to report an offensive picture and then have the mods review. After review then it could have a “Approved by the Moderators” symbol under it instead of a link.
I would consider paying again for something like this (after Jerry gets through his list of course.)
As I said in the post you quoted, we’re already talking about it. Someone higher in the hierarchy than I will report the results…
I need to retake Reading Comprehension 101. :smack:
Thank you.
That’s true. Until it gets implemented, people can put a URL in the biography section of the profile. Like this:
me: www.example.com/arnold_winkelried/superHOT.jpg
Awww! And here it said superHOT and everything, I was so hopeful.
I simply do not understand the general attitude to stuff like avatars and photos here - it’s almost as if people are objecting to other people having something they want and that only affects them. Why?
Sorry, what I meant is unless you take the step to block avatars, they’re right there in the thread whereas to see a profile picture, you must deliberately view a poster’s profile.
It does affect us. In particular, it adds extra work to mods. The absolutely best thing by far of this board is that it has great moderators. They make all the difference in the world. Ergo, keeping them happy and well-fed is a must.
I want to see fewer things, not more, that they have to worry about.
And, as I mentioned before, expecting “self-policing” (a.k.a. junior modding) is a bad idea.
And, even as to avatars, and even though certain features might be turned on or off as suits a person, the simple fact is that this Board has a flavor and character that many of us prefer to other, more typical message boards. We see a connection between the things that we don’t have available (like avatars, excessive smileys, images, etc.) and the flavor and character of the Board. This being the case, we view any such change as likely to significantly affect the flavor and character we prefer.
Which, I think you would agree, would indeed affect us, as well as those who want the change. We may be wrong in our assumptions and predictions, but at least we aren’t being spoilsports or unreasonable bitches.
I think it’s a great idea and would definately be willing to re-up my paid status for the privalege.
It’s under discussion.
Rest assured that when I have a profile picture, it will be superHOT! Which unfortunately excludes any picture of me.
It’s the American way.
Don’t forget copyright. If the SDMB hosts avatars and profile images on their servers, they become responsible.
The Mods are big boys and girls. If a new feature will adversely impact their work, they can explain that themselves. They don’t need us to “defend” them.
I understand what you’re saying, it’s just that - in my memory at least - the argument is seldom framed that way.
Since we have Ed’s thread up now, I’m locking this one.
