I’m not going to be drawn into an argument on our procedures.
And I’m sorry you feel bitter, Satan. That was not our intention. However, as I stated at the time, there is no good way to tell someone “no, thank you” and make them feel good about it.
If you think I mishandled it, you’re welcome to discuss the situation with Ed Zotti.
Neither is it my intention to go into exactly why we turned you down, except to say that 1. you have misstated the situation as it was explained to you and 2. this confirms the judgement we made in the first place as being the correct course of action.
Since you value being “the most popular poster on the board,” I would think that becoming a moderator would be the LAST thing you’d want to do, for in doing this work you sometimes have to do things that make you MOST unpopular. You also have to subsume a lot of your own personal opinions and judgements for the sake of Cecil and the Reader and not always say what’s on your mind, sometimes you even have to just shut up and let stuff that you know is incorrect and just plain wrong go past you.
Being a moderator does have some payoff, mostly it’s the satisfaction of having a small part in keeping this site well maintained and a going concern. There’s no other real compensation, unless you count that coffee mug, an occasional “Way to go” from Ed and Cecil, and the respect of the Teeming Millions. (We don’t even get that last part sometimes.)
Moderating is not a prize to be given out for popularity. It ain’t junior class president. For you to demand this as your due “because everybody says I’m the most popular” demonstrates that you didn’t understand the situation in the first place.

The Straight Dope
TubaDiva, yep, that seems to be how it was. They might have turned me down a couple of times but I responded to that respectfully so when the time came they needed me to be a moderator, I was there.
Tuba, I apologize if ever you don’t feel appreciated. You are. Very much so. This board is a big part of many of our lives, and it needs maintenance and care, just like any other important thing. You guys do that on a daily basis and keep this place clean and in working order.
We get mad, sometimes, at the Reader’s policy sometimes, or even the law. Unfortunately, as Admin and mods, you take the heat that is aimed at the policy. Shit doesn’t *only rolls downhill,
Anyway, again, thank you for your hard work Tuba. Diva doesn’t do you justice.
Satan. What can I say, except that I am disappointed. It sounds like it has been burning inside of you for quite a while now. That is unfortunate. You seem to be blessed with friends, love, popularity, a good job, etc, etc… And yet that is not good enough for you? Thank god Mod status is not based on popularity. If it were, then all that this board stands for would be shit. I’m not saying I trust the policy, but I’m saying I trust that people like Tuba, Euty, David, Gaudere, Manny, ah hell, all of em would not do something wrong or unethical to one of us. Maybe it was a bad day for you. That is all I can hope for. If nothing else, this calls for an apology.
You are most popular poster for a reason, man. Because we feel you like us and I know you do, and you care. Not to “congratulate”, but I saw what you did in chat last night. And “us” is everyone, including the mods and admin.
Or maybe I’ve had too much to drink on this lovely St. Paddy’s Day…
I swear, some people want the moon. I am sure that the Board tries to pick the best people for the job, taking in their qualifications, temperment, availability, and experience. Moderators have a tough job.
That’s why I want a job that’s more suited to my limited abilities.
Administrator!
Apologies will follow if I ever get to post again.
“. . . there is no good way to tell someone ‘no, thank you’ and make them feel good about it.”
As one who is still smarting over Jenny’s callous rejection of my marriage proposal of a few weeks back, I can vouch for the truth of this statement.
Tuba, my goddess, are you sure you won’t reconsider?

And now Ed tells me I have to get rid of my sig. Revisionist history, and all that. Doesn’t matter that it reflects an accurate statement of the voting.
In addition to doing unpopular things while keeping your lip (mostly) buttoned…
How many hours do you have to put in to do the job right?
W-a-y too many for most people, I’d wager. This would have to rank as a labor of love.
You have to get rid of your SIG??? Oh good lord. I’d say that Ed is just a deranged, shaved ape, but I’ve never seen him, so I don’t know if he’s shaved or not.

Just wondering if Melin’s winning of the “best moderator” category may have prompted a grumpy Ed in his decision to ban her?

If it’s any consolation, I have NEVER aspired to be moderator! I have enough trouble keeping my 2 children in line…and I have the option of sending them to their room to cool off.
I think a lot of ugliness on this board could be avoided if people would refrain from posting at the peak of their anger. Rule of thumb: If you are shaking in anger as you write, click the “x” instead of the “Post Reply” button.
Finally, love 'em or hate 'em, but dissing the staff of the SD is like being a dinner guest and criticizing the food. Not only is it rude, but it’s a sure way of being asked to leave. Hostility begets hostility.
We don’t pay a penny to be here, and I imagine the SD staff makes no money on this venture.
