I’m trying to launch my own jewelry design business, doing home shows (like Tupperware
), and I would like to have my own domain name. Can someone recommend a host (?) that is reliable and user-friendly, since I am not a computer programmer, although my 3 teen-agers can do nearly anything I need done. I just want to be able to post pics and have some info, etc. Thanks for your input.
I helped a friend put together a tattoo business website using GoDaddy as a host provider. They sold us the name and the website space and have been just fine to work with.
Note: Site has some NSFW pics in the gallery but they’re pretty deep in there…
I use aplus.net for my Disney site. They have a few different platforms available and I’ve never had any problems with them. Very reliable.
I’ve had no problem hosting with superb.net for the past ten years. ![]()
We’ve used godaddy for a while.
You can purchase a domain name through them, and they host.
I don’t really like navigating their site, but their service is reliable and cheap. I’ve had good luck with the customer service, and they have a lot of tools at the website. . .open source stuff, and stuff for puchase. Like eCommerce tools, database management, content management systems, etc.
Sure you could buy a domain name for your small business but Why?
Microsoft Office Live Small Business is a free web hosting/e-commerce service for small business owners.
If you’re not crazy about Microsoft, check out GooglePages. It doesn’t have the features of Office Live but if all you want is simple and quick it might fit the bill
Both are free for the basic service.
Whatever you do, don’t let the domain name expire. Mark your calender. GoDaddy wanted a $75 fee to reinstate an expired domain, when I registered the thing for like $8 to begin with. After arguing with them I said screw it and just waited a few months for the domain to become free, then I registered it at http://namecheap.com, which last I heard didn’t have those fees.
Yeah, they charge $200 instead:
All registrars have such fees. The #1 problem I run in to with my clients and their domain name registration is that they register their domain for a bunch of years using a throwaway email address, their friend’s email address, some other company’s email address or some email address they stop using. It is an absolute pain to get the domain names back.
Instead, use a valid email address when you register a domain, only register it for 1 year at a time, turn on auto-renew, and everything will be fine. GoDaddy will send you email reminders 90, 60, 30, 15 and 5 days before renewal. If you have auto-renew on you don’t have to take any action but the reminders are good for reminding you that you may need to update your credit card information.
The usual advice is not to register a domain with the people who host your website. If you have a falling out with the webhost (which can happen for a number of reasons) they can make moving your domain name very frustrating, and if you’re running an online business very costly (in terms of lost revenue).
Yeah, I’ve had accounts with StartLogic, SimpleHost, Dreamhost and PowWeb and liked them all. I got free domains with all of the accounts, but then decided to stick with Dreamhost. So when I decided to consolidate I did have to go through the rigamarole of changing DNS numbers to point to Dreamhost. Now I’m in the process of moving the registration of all of my domains to Dreamhost. Who hosts the domain and who the Registrar is are two very different things.
Don’t get a domain through Yahoo! They lure you in with cheap prices but then raise the price. I got several domains for $4.99 or $2.99 or $1.99, but the renewal cost has been, first, $12.95, then $14.95, which was ok, seemed reasonable, but now it’s going up to $34.95 at the beginning of July. Forget that. Since I’ve been working to consolodate all my accounts and domains to my Dreamhost account, I tried to transfer the Registrar but Yahoo has refused the transfer request for 2 domains that will expire early next month! They’d better let me move the domains before the renewal date.
I don’t want to be argumentative because I don’t know much about the whole domain thing but I had exactly this scenario last week. Years ago some one in a club I belong to registered a domain with name cheap. I was alerted that the site was down and asked the host (ICDsoft) why. They said it was namecheap that killed it because of the domain expiring. We couldn’t even remember who registered it.
I emailed namecheap who of course because of hackers and all that said they couldn’t even address it with me. What they had me do was open an account to which they assigned a random domain name and I put in funds through paypal. They then killed the new domain name and applied the funds to our correct one. They didn’t charge anything extra for this. I just put in funds for $18.xx for 2 more years. This all took a couple of days of emailing. Within a few hours the site was back up and everything was good until the hosting expired and the site went down again. How I became responsible for this crap I’ll never know. I still can’t access the namecheap account for our club but we have time to figure it all out.
I guess namecheap did allright by us and we didn’t really understand that.
I use Domain Direct, which is associated with Tucows somehow. I just emptied out my deleted items, but they’ve been fine with me. I have three domains. Someone wants one of 'em if I don’t, but I still do.
Can’t recommend them highly enough. Unlimited domains, one free with registration and ten bucks each for the others, 300GB storage, 300GB bandwidth, unlimited email accounts, easy FTP setup, excellent tech support, something like seven bucks a month.
Huh, on edit it appears that hosting space is now unlimited. My recommendation stands! ![]()
