If I want to cite a specific post from a long thread in a different thread (rather than quote), is it possible to link to that post, or do I have to just link to the whole thread and hope people will scroll to the post I’m talking about? If it’s possible, woo hoo! If not, I guess I can resign myself to quoting. Thanks for any help.
You want to do this?
Woo Hoo, it is posible. In fact it is discussed in here about twice a week, but the board is so slow lately that it’s easier to type the explanation than to look up the links and easier on the board, too, I imagine.
There are a couple of ways to do it (more than that, actually, but that a whole different subject). What I do is hover over the “quote” icon, in the status line at the bottom is the URL for that icon. The last part of the URL says “postid=” and a number. Write down the number.
Construct your link as if you were linking to the thread itself, but add “#postXXXXXX” to the end of it (the Xs are the number you wrote down).
For your post above the link would be:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=65090#post1218515
or:
See Beadalin’s post above.
There are other ways, but I find this the easiest.
And, if you ever want to know how someone does something, simply click the quote button and look at the codes they used.

Thank you. I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was repeating something that had been addressed (lots) before. I gotta learn how to refine my search! Good info, I’ll be using it.
Don’t worry about it, we’re here to help. It’s not always that easy to find the stuff that the people that haunt this area see all the time.
Glad it helped.
