can you quote a post in a different thread?

I found a link to a post that will fit nicely in a thread I posted in, but when I hit the “quote” button, can cut/paste the quoting into a different thread?

You have two options: cut and paste the entire quote, making sure to cite the person and the thread in which the quote appears, and linking to the original thread, summarizing the quote.

The simplest way is to hit the quote button for the post you want to quote, then copy the text from the reply box and paste it into a reply on the other thread you want your post to be in.

Q.E.D and dantheman have covered how to quote text.

If you want to link to a specific post in a different thread (rather than quote the pertinent points), here is how it’s done…

**Linking directly to a post within a thread… **

First, click the Quote button on the post you want to link to, then copy and paste the address field into the reply window, to get…
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&postid=2671041

Replace the first “newreply” with “showthread” to get…
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&action=newreply&postid=2671041

Then delete “s=&action=newreply” and add “#postxxxxxx” to get…
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?&postid=2671041#post2671041

Then add the tags and a description to get…
description

Now you have your link and you just have to add your erudite text around it.

Or you can construct the link completely manually by modifying appropriately the following URL by replacing NNN with the postid:

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?postid=NNN#postNNN

You can get the post number (inserted after both “postid” and “#post”) by holding your mouse over the quote button at the bottom of that post; it will be at the end of the URL displayed in the status bar at the bottom of your browser. Or, you can press the quote button, and a new reply window will open. The URL for that reply window should show in the URL field at the top of your browser window, and the URL contains the postid for the post.
Example:
…postid=1684541#post1684541

I know, I know. It’s kind of a pain. That’s why it is rare to see people link to a specific post.
