Can I make a simple customized ringtone melody, totally free?

I would like to use a simple three-note melody for my cell phone ringtone, but the phone itself (Nokia) doesn’t seem to have a feature that lets you pick the notes for a customized ringtone. Is there a way I can do this for free?

All the “Free Ringtones!” and “Make Your Own Ringtones!” websites seem to be peddling either song tune clips or software to make ringtones out of MP3, etc., files of song tune clips. I’m not interested. I just want to hear a particular three-note sequence coming out of my phone when somebody calls me. How do I get such a melody created and sent to my phone so I can use it?

On my phone, they’re MIDI files. You should be able to pick up free MIDI composer softwareh somewhere on the web.

What model Nokia phone do you have
And what service is it on?

It’s a Nokia phone with a T-Mobile plan; excuse my moronitude, but I can’t seem to find a phone model number anywhere on the phone itself or in any of its menus. (It’s one of the basic “block” phones, no super-skinny profile or flip-top or anything like that.)

Thanks Chuck, I’ll see about that MIDI composer software…

Is there any way to get a sound recording into a phone as a ringtone? I have some original files that exist nowhere else, and couldn’t easily be made into MIDI files that I might like to use.

It depends on the model but many moderately new phones can play regular MP3 files. You can transfer the files via a data cable. It possible that you have to use phone-specific software but it could also be recognized as a removable USB drive. If you don’t have a suitable cable transferring the files via Bluetooth or an infrared interface might be an option. If all else fails you could upload the files to some website and download them using your phone.

If we’re talking a Nokia 6030 or 6010 or something like, there’s a definite issue with connectivity–no Bluetooth, no infrared, no WAP access to speak of and limited file handling capability in the OS.

I guess now is not the time to tell you about the one button ringtone editor I have on my Dash, huh? I’ll shut up now, gloating is SO not pretty…

A few phones also have the capability to edit a MIDI right in the phone. I knew a guy who spent a boring class one day programming the Itchy and Scratchy theme into his phone.

Speaking as someone who was just treated to the melody of Offenbach’s “Can-Can” music (serving as ringtone for a Korean surgeon attending a tumor conference at our hospital), I think there’s something to be said for a simple three-note melody.

Of course, the even simpler sound of a phone ringing might be better appreciated by others, even if limits one’s capacity for Individual Expression.

Well, you should probably figure out a few things about your phone… can you connect the phone to a computer, at least? If you can, try uploading MIDI (.mid) and mp3 files into the phone and see if you can select either as a ring tone. I’d recommend against using mp3 files since it’s harder to record the sounds, the quality isn’t as good, and the tune itself actually takes time to load. If you can play MIDI ring tones, look for a free/shareware MIDI sequencer, compose the tune, and upload it to your phone.

Even though it is not a Nokia, I am going to add the fact that the only way to get a custom ring tone into my LG phone is to mail it to my text mailbox as an attachment. My USB cable is useless in that realm.

I now have the theme song to Phantasm in an impressive Midi (14 instruments i believe)

Oh and my model number is under the battery.

There’s also the question of your provider… many providers like to do infuriating things like block file transfers for no reason, disable data-cable use…

My friend’s phone has to make a stupidly loud noise when you take a photo (of either a monkey, duck, or ‘camera click’ that sounds like dishes falling on the floor, take your pick), probably to prevent lawsuits over up-skirt shots and such. It left the factory with a ‘silent’ option, but Telus or whomever got rid of it.

I did it! Thanks, everybody! I found an online MIDI file editor/sequencer (didn’t even have to download the software) and made the note sequence I wanted and saved it as a MIDI file.

Then I emailed that file as an attachment to [my phone number]@[my provider’s email address]. Received the message, extracted the .midi file Object, saved it to my Tones folder, and selected it as my ringtone. Easy as pie, when you know how. Thanks again.
