Can I sue a car-keyer to recover the expense of catching him? [new title]

I have a problem with people key scratching our cars. I’m thinking about putting a camera outside my house to catch the people doing it. Let’s say I get a good photo of the person and post a $5000 reward to catch the fool who did it. When I sue, can I sue the person for the reward money too? So really he is paying for the reward.

I’m not a lawyer, but it seems like if you could, the whole legal system would fall apart.

I would say that you might be able to, but that would take a lawyer I’d imagine. Hell, if you had a good lawyer, you could probably sue for the camera system. What I would do is take the photo to the police and let them deal with it. If it happens on a regular basis, then other people are most likely having the problem also. You may even want to send the tape into the local news stations. If it does turn out to be a big problem, I’d imagine that they would play it.

Chubbs, I changed the title of this thread. In the future, please choose more descriptive thread titles than Can I do this?

Umm…IANALawyer disclaimer, but aren’t rewards normally paid by the people offering them? Seems silly to have a criminal pay for his own reward.

In other words, if I caught the perp, you’d pay me 5000. Since you caught the perp, you pay yourself 5000. Or am I completely wrong? Are criminals liable for awards associated with their capture? If so, then why stop at 5000 smackeroos? Make it a million.

he/she cant make it a million, because the money comes out of his/her pocket first, then it is paid back by the criminal.

Then there was that guy who was already in prison and he sued himself for some reason or other and lost so he had to pay himself some huge amount but since he didn’t have it he declared the prison system to have subsidiary liability (for not preventing him for doing whatever he had done to himself) and took them to court. Somehow, I do not comprehend why, the judge ruled against him. It just shows you how bad things are in the judicial system.
