Can I watch the Evil Dead movies?

The limiting factor is gore. I like horror movies, but I can’t stomach a lot of blood. I’ve seen Army of Darkness already, which I liked, but I’ve heard the 1st two are bloodier.

Here’s some examples of horror movies/thrillers that had less than the threshold limit of gore for me (I’ll leave off the ones without blood in them) in them:

Scream trilogy
I Know What… 1 & 2
Sleepy Hollow
Session 9
The Haunting (both versions)
H20

Then there are ones that I could watch, but would have turned off if they were any bloodier:

House on Haunted Hill (the remake, the orginal is tame)
From Hell
From the Mouth Of Madness (axes, eek!)
13 Ghosts

And I won’t watch any of those 80’s slasher flicks like the rest of the Halloween series, Nightmare on Elm Steet or Friday the 13th because they’re way too messy.

So, dopers, how would you say the Evil Dead movies compare? And…before Ash’s hand problem in the Army of Darkness movie, are there any hand injuries? It’s not neccessarily the kiss of death for a movie, but I like to be prepared.

That’s tough; it sounds to me like they would be right at your limit there. I’d rate them as just a little gorier than House on Haunted Hill. Evil Dead 2, you know, is basically a comedy version of the first one, so even though it’s gory it’s all really campy. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them, so I’m sketchy on the details. But I do have a very weak stomach when it comes to gore in movies (I couldn’t make it through Dead Alive all in one sitting, and that’s not realistic at all) so I’ve got a vivid memory of some of the bits.

I remember Evil Dead 2 as being the goriest, while Army of Darkness was the most action-oriented. There definitely are hand injuries in the second movie; a lot of it is devoted to showing exactly why he has a chainsaw for a hand in the third. And I don’t remember anything particularly repulsive in the first one, although I think there was another hand injury in that.

(And I’m sure other dopers will be able to come along and give a more informed opinion; I just wanted to post in case you were just about to run out to the video store.)

The second one should be doable for you, mainly due to the comedic tone.
The first one is a lot darker in tone, and features one of the more infamous scenes in horror history when one female character is raped by a tree… I’m not sure that you’d want to see that one.
Anyway, if you see the second one there is a long prologue covering the events of the first movie. [spoilers]The point where the spirit flies into Ash is where the flashbach ends.[/spoilers]

The question isn’t “Could I watch the Evil Dead movies,” the question is “Should I watch the Evil Dead movies,” to which the answer is

YES!!!

Okay, the first one is gorier than fuck, but when I saw it, I was squeemish, and it really helped me get over it. But yeah, if you’re really easily swayed, stay away from it.

Evil Dead 2, the gore in it is over the top and silly. Remember the blood geyser in Army of Darkness? It’s mainly that kind of stuff. You’ll be fine.

NOW GO WATCH THE MOVIES AND QUIT WASTING TIME ON THE BOARDS!!!

Oh, and Enjoy!

A friend and I saw Evil Dead 2 when it came out, and we thought it was pretty darned funny.
