And Manhattan makes a surge in the “Which Moderator Has the Most Pit Threads” race.
I don’t mind the swearing, but this part does bother me -
Threatening to ban someone for expressing an opinion in GQ strikes me as over-the-top power whoring. It’s not unusual for threads in GQ to evolve into something more appropriate for Great Debates, the Pit, IMHO or even Cafe Society. The participants can’t move the thread, but the moderators can - that’s their job.
There was no reason for Manhattan to throw a hissy fit. Just announce that you’re moving the thread to the Pit and be done with it.
I’d say it’s the job of the participants to learn how to post appropriately for the forums in which they’re participating. If someone repeatedly refuses to follow the rules of the board, they should at least get smacked around a little by the mods, warned or whatever they feel is appropriate. It shouldn’t be perfectly okay for people to feel free to derail any thread they wish because “hey, the mods can just move it to the Pit/GD/IMHO/MPSIMS/etc.” The mods have enough to deal with already.
I want to be on manhattan’s side when the shit hits the fan.
Of course, manhattan has flagrantly disregarded his own forum rules on many occasions. Not only that, he once accused respected board member Guinastasia of being a member of a child sex cult.
How is this guy still a moderator?
Threads evolve and often there is no obvious place where a GQ thread becomes something else. I believe that it is, in fact, the mod’s job to make that call and move the thread when appropriate.
If there is a poster who consistently inserts opinions in GQ threads and turns them into Great Debates, then, indeed, he/she should be called on that, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.
There is also a distinction to be made between starting a thread in the wrong forum and responding to a thread in a way that is outside the scope of that forum. Often when I am reading a thread I’m not really aware which forum it is in. That makes it easy to accidently slip an opinion in a GQ thread. That’s hardly a reason to get banned.
Hey, if he can swear without closing a thread (“I am the fucking hall monitor!”), he can swear whilst doing so, particularly if people work hard enough to make him want to.
Because he is a person and a poster with ideas and opinions which he is allowed to express.
Moderators have to put in a certain amount of hours moderating their own forums, and dealing with problem posters and threads in their own forums, but nothing says they are not allowed to have and express opinions in threads that interest them. And when a moderator is posting in a forum that is not under his or her purview, it’s certainly clear to me that s/he is not posting as a moderator. (the exception being when a moderator is specifically called into a thread in another forum to discuss a moderating issue).
Perhaps the confusion arises because “moderator” will appear under a mods name whether or not s/he is posting as part of performing a specific duty. But it isn’t too hard to discern the personal from the administrative.
Sorry Mr. manhattan,
I meant no disrespect in spelling your name wrong. Please don’t ban me. Or swear at me.
-Sandwriter
I was thinking that swearing was reserved for the Pit from what I gathered reading the rules and watching the content of the threads.
Because, fuckwad, the administration took action, Manny
apologized, the R.P. Guinastasia accepted the apology.
It is not very Catholic to be dishonest, Beastal. Fuck head.
Sua
Let’s see . . .
Sandwriter, in keeping witht he precedent set by out Great Leader, swearing in mordeation has always been acceptable in all fora. It is not and has never been limited to the Pit.
BNorton, it’s all a matter of quantity. If someone continually abuses the moderators’ time, after having been told not to, repeatedly, then I certainly thing a threat of banning is appropriate. And that’s all Manny was talking about, IMHO.
Beastial, kindly fuck right off, there’s a good boy.
Or to close it. With strongly worded advice to follow the forum guidelines. We’re all adults here, presumably. I don’t understand the problem with a little cursing, by members or staff.
The solution is that you pay more attention to which forum you are reading; this is your responsibilty as a community member. Not that the rules be slackened. Otherwise, what’s the point of having different forums? And frankly, I’m surprised that thread was allowed to travel down the path of opinion as far as it was. I see evidence of quite a bit of lenience.
No, it doesn’t appear to be the case, but if we issue no reminders that there are rules to be followed and penalties for repeated violations thereof, members will a) feel free to do whatever they wish, and b) gripe about not being warned of infractions.
He never aplogised to Guin, he apologised for ‘posting on a subject that he had issues with’ or some other similar tripe.
And who said I was Catholic?
I can’t tell if this is a cheap shot or a compliment.
Y’know, Power Whore is the best band name I have heard in a long time.
Kudos to bnorton.
Ha! Well if I had to pick one I’d say a cheap shot at manny and a compliment to the duck.
Hmmm. Interesting thought. Why don’t you start a thread in GQ about it?
[sub]G,D&R[/sub]
Don’t you think that’s between him and Guin? She accepted it as sufficient apology and forgave him, and there may have been more said privately in e-mail that’s none of our business. Everybody seems satisfied with the outcome except you - do you always hold grudges for this long on behalf of another poster?
And if you’re not Catholic, why do you care anyway? Do you have some sort of personal problem with manhattan apart from this issue? Or maybe some special fondness for Guin? If something’s eating at you, now’s a good time and place to get it off your chest.
Mods are human, too - how about giving them a break and letting them screw up every once in a while without demanding a blood sacrifice? Goodness knows, they certainly put up with enough crap from the rest of us every day.
WTF does D&R mean or G, D&R, Dash and Run, Duck and Run? Guffaw, Duck & Run.
It seems to be associated with ‘witty’ one liners.
Is it some kind of excuse or cover for a drive by?
“I posted a drive by, which I know is wrong, but I’ll put D&R at the bottom and then it will be okay?”
